I'm not saying I don't like the cap hit you were proposing, but the term.

He will take a bridge deal because he stands to gain much more money down the road.

He'll still get a huge raise on his current contract, and he will leave himself open to get an even bigger raise if he continues to produce.

Signing a long term deal leaves himself open to leaving a lot of money on the table.

- david22

I dunno. Maybe I don't have the hockey player mentality, but to me, I don't see why you would leave money on the table in the short term, to possibly make it back + some, in the long term.

Let's say, he does the bridge deal and gets 2 yrs 3.5M.

Then his next contract is 5 yrs 6M.

Total will be 36.5M.

If the Sens offer him and he gets 4.5 over 7 years, he gets 31.5M.

The difference is 5M, but you have the security with injuries and/or having an 'off' year in your next contract year.

Look at Jared Cowen. I bet that kid is kicking himself now for not accepting the 7yr deal the Sens offered.

I know Stone won't be a Cowen, but still. There is something to be said about job security. Since the NHL has guaranteed contracts, if he signs that 7 yr deal, he's set for life.

It depends on how you look at it. Players and teams have mutual interests and gains. If Stone signs a 3 year deal sure he'll likely see a lot of $ but it'll certainly be more if he's a pending UFA (which would be the case by signing a 5 year deal). The cap hit will also be a lot lower if he signs a bridge deal:
Example:

3 years @3 m per season THEN ..? 5m cap hit? 5.5M? I certainly think those are high estimates consindering he's on a budget team. If he signs at say 5 years at 3.75 he only goes 1 year into his UFA years and more importantly turns 28 - as a UFA - which means a BIG extension when he's 26 turning 27 the year before that

He is the greatest troll on Hockeybuzz, because he almost never breaks character.

Second greatest (never breaks character, game not quite on Prock's level) is probably a Senators fan

Trying to stay cool. Refuse to be disappointed if they miss playoffs. Great season, amazing second half, unbelievable game late night.

I believe Brian Murray does a huge draft week deal. Sens have a great asset base and are in a position to deal for an elite player to add to their top line.

I miss the Great Climate Change Debate.

Do you think Dopps is actually a Senators fan, or just some guy who populates the seedy underbelly of sites, quoting massive blocks of text in an effort to fill his life with pointless arguments?

Stone has been nothing short of a revelation over the past couple of months... I was luke-warm on him coming into the season, but he's found his stride in a big way and that line with Turris is playing like a genuine NHL top line. Also, the Calder talk is no joke now that he's tied with Forsberg and 1 point back of Gaudreau... while also having the most ES points and best +/- of any of them, having a full 1/4 of his goals being game winners, and having the most takeaways in the entire league. Very impressive.

For a team struggling to find its structure after losing Alfredsson and Spezza in successive years, this run has been an incredibly valuable formative experience for any number of players on the team. Led by Karlsson and Turris, the kids have taken this team over in a big way and helped to forge a new team identity. Last night was a perfect example, with Stone, Hoffman, and Pageau taking over a game that looked like it was beyond salvage... and making Crosby a -3 over the 2nd half of the game, after his first period statement. Win or lose, this run has been a coming out party for the team's new core, and the fanbase has been completely re-energized in the process.

Does anyone still think that kind of team development is less meaningful or valuable than the difference between a #14/15 draft pick and a #6-10 draft pick? Particularly now that there's been a real scramble of projected rankings for pretty much anyone outside of the top few consensus picks?

I'm still baffled that people honestly thought getting a high draft pick and the development of this current team would go hand in hand. If we were in the lottery discussion, guys like Hoffman, Stone, Zibby, even Ceci, would be question marks going forward. These guys are slowly coming into their own now, and that is a good thing. Draft day will be interesting. I fully expect a move or two in the 1st round. As great as this run has been, there is still a need to a franchise centre and maybe a piece or two on the blueline. This run is an example of the team that could be seen next season.

I think this is the important part of the discussion that gets missed all the time. Development of players requires that they be given playing time and roles consistent with their potential growth. This team would not be possible without the departures of Alfredsson and Spezza. And, I did not support the resigning of Bobby Ryan.

I believe Murrat does a huge deal this summer. But, like the Methot signing it will a top line skater that fits the young roster already in place.

My first choice was Evander Kane but, likely, that option is now impossible.

Ottawa should hold onto their draft choices and deal some of their roster talent - Anderson, Cowen, Chiasson, Neil, Smith, Leggy - lot's of names there to deal as well as prospects like Prince. Can throw together a pretty nice package with those names up there.

Philly is always a wild card and needs D and G - (maybe Simmonds, Couturier), san Jose, Dallas, Carolina - lot;s of teams with big names looking for depth, Ottawa is in a good spot to add this summer....and we also upped our Free Agency appeal huge with this run

I agree with shedding Philips and Neil contracts (Retire).. As well as the inevitable buyout of Colin Greening. Legwand and Michalek will most likely be on opening day roster next season. If there sa Cowen trade at the draft I'd be stoked but his trade value is not high atm.

Edit: As for the draft, Murray has some good picks in a great draft. It could be his last and I think he'll get some good peices for the future.
As it sits today Sens would have picks 13th ,42nd(Dal) and 43rd with our first 3 picks

I could see ottawa taking Travis Konecny from the 67's.....they love drafting players with local connections. Kid is a little small, but with mad skill. have heard great things about him.............you leave him in junior for the year, let him maybe play for team canada, and you can keep a real close eye on him.

another interesting pick would be Oliver Kylington.........Swedish D-man. we seem to have luck with those guys.

They say you shouldn't draft for need and you should just take the best player available, but I don't see the Sens needing another undersized center. Turris and Pageau are on the small side.

If they can't find themselves a big, skilled centerman.. which will be tough.. they need to keep drafting Dmen, IMO.

As for the projections, if the Sens do end up drafting 13-17ish, I expect them to go off the page like in previous years.
