I know im a little late to the party. I was around when the contracts first were announced but then I had to go to work.

I dislike both, JB overpaid for both.

Benning sure is using lots of $$$ on his players. Hope that scary cap it $75 million next year. With the way he's been signing our players this year, I get this feeling that he'll be bringing up lots of rookies into the club next season. I mean rookies doesn't cost a lot so he'll be using lots of spare money on resigning some players. In my opinion (don't get mad at me), I think Richardson will be gone next season.

If Dorsett brings what he did this season every year that cash for him is ok. Sbisa is a bit high but since the Commodity on Dmen has pushed prices up what can you do? Tanev is only worth 3.5-3.9 and look what he got...it is what it is.

The freak out over on HF Boards about the Sbisa and Dorsett signings is amazing. A bunch of 12-year-old girls over there

I don't get the uproar. Neither took a hometown discount, but neither has any trade protection either. Bieksa signed a reasonable contract with a NTC and now he and his "good value" are practically welded to the team. Sbisa is not going to turn into Shae Weber, but there is a good chance that he continues to develop to the point where his contract is a bargain. Worse case scenerio, both new contracts are tradeable IMO.

Edit:

It also tells you that they are likely planning on having one or two more entry level contracts on the books next season, which is what I thought everyone was screaming for.

Brandon Prust is a decent comparable to Dorsett:

At age 28, Prust had 5 goals, 12 assists (17 total points), 156 PIMS, 144 hits, 82 games played. That summer, he signed with the Habs for $2.5M per year for 4 years.

Derek Dorsett this season, is 28 years old:

7 goals, 18 assists (25 total points), 169 PIMS, 163 hits, 77 games played. Just signed an extension for $2.65M per year for 4 years.

Nobody in MTL is currently complaining about Brandon Prust (that I am aware of).

Sbisa is a bit harder to justify. The closest comparable that I could find was Nicklas Grossmann. Signed a 4 year, $3.5M per year deal with Philly (at age 27) coming off a season where he had 0 goals, 11 assists (11 points total), 36 PIMS, 164 hits, 152 blocks, and was a +5 in 74 games.

Sbisa this year has 3 goals, 8 assists (11 points total), 46 PIMS, 149 hits, 127 blocks, and is -9 in 74 games.

Obviously the numbers aren't quite as good, but Grossmann has turned into a decent top 4 guy for Philly (he is actually a +9 this season with 14 points in 66 games, even with the team struggling). Sbisa is a couple years younger than Grossmann was at the time of signing, so I guess Benning is banking on his potential for even greater improvement.

All in all, I think Dorsett was market value, and Sbisa is slightly over paid... but not to the point of everyone freaking the (frank) out and calling for Benning's head, like is happening over on HF.

I thought the Prust signing was a bit over the top when it happened and I think the same thing of the Dorsett signing but it's not something I'd lose sleep over. A lot of money allocated to a 4th liner but if you don't have anyone on your roster making the huge bucks it's probably not going to be the end of you. Sbisa could turn out to be a good deal but if he doesn't improve from what he is now I think its too much money for a 5/6D

The canucks have not had a player with Dorsetts intangibles in, well I dont really remember. The caps going up, And If we didnt resign him, pretty much everyone would b!itching and moaning.

The signing is fine by me.

For sure. Of the 3 FA forwards he's definitely the one I wanted back most

Yes - he's the one they needed to lock up...as Sheldon from Langley said, long time since we had a guy bring what he brings to the table.

Some of the hatefull comments about this article are disappointing. Saying suck it up, your husband makes millions etc... Rich people still have the same issues, just because they have money doesn't make all their problems go away.

Moving from city to city not knowing anyone would be very difficult, especially for the wife. The husband has his teammates and is constantly travelling, while the hockey wife is stuck at home. I'm sure depression is really common with nhl wives.

I think we need to stop using that. It's personal and the rest of us get to hide behind our made up names. It's cool that he's been on the radio, but let's try and call him Vancity and not use his real name. I know when you do it you're doing it for a reaction, but I think we should be more respectful to him.
