I think the Flyers may try to package their two number ones -- one of which will be a top-10 pick -- as a means of moving up to draft a coveted player whom they consider a potential major impact player at his position (apart from McDavid and Eichel).

It seemed like they were so eager to move Hartnell. I just don't understand it.

The move worries me a bit because an advanced stat guy would have nixed that deal in a heartbeat if he had any say in the matter.

We disagreed on this before, but it's my understanding that the coach and GM didn't want Hartnell on the top line anymore and that Hartnell wasn't happy about it. We'll never really know, but wouldn't keep a guy unhappy with his role unless I had too.

I doubt he put up much of a fuss about the top line thing. Players get moved around the lineup on a constant basis. When he played on a line with Schenn and Simmonds, he elevated the play of both of them.

The Flyers traded a top line LW for a fringe NHL player for 2 years of future salary relief. People seem to know for sure that Hartnell will decline and be horrible in those final two years and the trade will look better then.

I don't know who it is. I have a hunch, and that's all it is, that the player is Dylan Strome or Ivan Provorov. What I do know for sure is that the Flyers will at least make pitches to move up if they don't win the McDavid lottery.
- bmeltzer

Why would they have to trade up for Provorov? Is he no longer expected to be there at 7?

He's been rising and it's possible he's the 1st d-man off the board.

Horrific trade.. Bottom line. I always thought if they really wanted rid of him they could have got more maybe in some kind of package deal. But I guess we will never know.

Not exactly, ...and a 4th round pick. However, that's why I think there's more to it. If that's really all the Flyers could get there's more than we know. I haven't seen his PM vs PM drawn, but that, I believe, was a big problem in Philly. Kudos to Hartnell who is having a good season.

Obviously they couldn't or they would've. Either nobody wanted him or others that did Hartnell blocked. Forwards defense was pretty bad so maybe they thought Umberger would help there, but knowingly trade for an injured Umby says to me other factors in play.

If umberger comes back healthy next year and can bounce back, it would really help our bottom 6 a lot

Hartnell drew more penalties than he took.

I really don't think theres much more to it. It was just a bad evaluation of talent by the team.

It's over. They can't undo it now.

If you are a believer in things such as statistical probability, which it sometimes appears, then yes, it is highly likely that Hartnell will not age gracefully

Doesn't change what he's doing now, and he gets credit for that. But aging players in general and players who play like Hartnell, who aren't great skaters to begin with...it can be both, where he plays well now and looks really bad later

I think it will be both, because of his skating, but we shall see

I wouldn't trade up unless it's for a top 2 pick. There's a pretty big drop off between 2 and 3 but not so much between 3 and maybe 8 or even 9. If we don't get Provorov, we might get Werenski. If not then maybe Barzal, or Hanifin, or Marner, or Strome. These are all awesome prospects and I'd be happy with any one of them. No real point in moving up to get a guy who could just as easily drop down to 7th or 8th. at least one of these guys WILL be available to us, though.

If he falls to Carolina or Columbus, they may have a chance to move up.

Strome, I'm not so sure. My uneducated guess would be that the cost would be prohibitive.

He'd probably be a better winger than half of the guys in the system.

(frank), he'd probably be a better winger than half of the guys on the actual big club.

oh yes.

dude that (frank)ing team. im worried about everything.

kunitz is weird though. i really though the skating would be the thing to go, but it hasnt.

he regularly keeps up, and he gets to scoring spots. but its the hands man. they have literally eroded. and i just dont get that. usually, they are the last to go.

granted, hes not even in the same stratosphere as kovalev, but even when he could barely walk he could still handle inside a phonebooth.

but whatever. par for the course this year.
