2 years of cap hit. Imagine if the Flyers had 2 less years on Vinny's contract. There's no doubt that it has sucked in the short term but I think it'll look good in the long term. |

Hartnell drew more penalties than he took.
I really don't think theres much more to it. It was just a bad evaluation of talent by the team.
It's over. They can't undo it now. - PhillySportsGuy
The narrative that's become accepted that Hextall knew Umberger was injured and that the abdominal tear that ended Umberger's season was there last summer is a false. It's based on an inaccurate article by Carchidi. This is what Hextall said at the town hall.
When you traded Hartnell for Umberger, (Hextall: "I knew this was coming") you said it was more of a scheme fit for Berube's system. Now it's come out that you knew about the injury, why couldn't you get more back? Hextall said they didn't know that Umberger was injured. What they knew was that any 33 year old player is going to have a lot of mileage and some issues, including Hartnell. He said that Umberger only told them a little while ago that he had been hurting for a year and a half. He siad Umberger told them that when he got home, he basically had to lie flat on his back and not do anything. He said that you can look at a players file, but you don't know for sure what you're getting injury-wise, and older players carry that risk. |

Not sure about that, the Jackets have a good young team with a lot of the pieces necessary to be a threat in the upcoming years.
Bobrovsky has become one of the better goalies in the league, Ryan Johanssen is a flat out stud. They have quality depth on the roster in guys like Dubinsky, Anisimov, Atkinson and Calvert and very good youngsters like Boone Jenner, Marko Dano and Alex Wennberg, not to mention top prospects like Oliver Bjorkstrand, Sonny Milano and Kerby Rychel. They have a solid if unspectacular defense corp, too. - Jsaquella
And obviously they are likely getting another very good prospect with this year's 7/8 pick. I wish the Jackets well, not only because they are a small market team, but for the overall health of the NHL. |

Which is fine except he had to pass a physical before the trade was complete. Right? I thought that was pretty standard. So is he a really good actor? Or are we back to throwing things at the medical staff? Or was it caught and they just agreed to deal?

I'm not even sure I would be willing to do that, and everybody knows how I feel about MM.
The gap in quality between a guy taken 4th-overall and 7th-overall isn't worth throwing away another shot at a potential top-4 D or top-6 F -- this draft is just too deep to be doing that. |

I agree, the player available at 21-32, Im guessing closer to 25 will still be a quality player. So unless they somehow can package those two picks for #1 or #2, I wouldn't do it.

I think I might package both 1st rounders if I can get to 3. Strome could be just as good. I know people say he road the coattails of McDavid but I think he might turn out just as good. |

Good questions. Pretty much what Leighton did to get a new deal from the team after the 2010 run. Then it came out his back was hurt. ¯_(ツ)_/¯ |

I wouldn't bank on "might." Unless a scout says he is as good as Eichel, I'm keeping two picks as was said above. |

You see reports and also some people I talked to that just assume that since he was with Erie he did. I don't think smart people do and I actually think he could end up just as good as the top 2. |

It's like saying Geno rides Sid's coat tails, ignoring the fact they play on separate lines mostly and produce just as well w/o the other in the lineup. |

This is true, and a kick in the teeth.
I would also look at the how and when Harts scored this year.
I think he had 8 goals in the first three months and something like 11 goals in the last month.
Now, Hartnell picked up as that team got healthy. Particularly around when Dubinsky came back and got his legs under him. so maybe while playing with a healthy G or whatever center on the 2nd line his early production would have been better.
But if his production would have been the same, we would have crucified him for that and I would bet he would have been moved at the deadline this year. Probably for more value, but still gone.
there is a lot more to that trade that I think we overlook. Expectations by management regarding some young guys etc. In two or three years we might look back at that move and say the Flyers are better for it.

I'd be looking to move up from 2X, to have a shot at a Boeser, Chabot, Konecny in the mid-1st, more than trading out. |

From the Sens blog:
If the Senators win both of their remaining games, Ottawa can make the playoffs a number of ways:
*The Islanders lose in regulation to both the Penguins and Blue Jackets;
*Pittsburgh lose to either the Islanders or Buffalo in regulation, or lose both in extra time;
*Detroit manages to get just 1 point or less combined against Montreal and Carolina;
*Boston loses to either Florida or Tampa in any manner
Ottawa needs to get it done tonight. And how about Mark Stone, a f'n 6th round pick? |

I'd agree with this Stand pat with the 2 picks. They have superstars in g and voracek. They need to grab supplemental pieces. They don't need "the" piece. I can't believe they won't be able to draft a super solid 2nd line piece for the future with the first pick. |

Hartnell's fitness -- or lack thereof -- was reportedly a concern. However, aside from Simmonds and sometimes Brayden Schenn on the power play, the Flyers leave their opponent's low slot unchallenged. It's no wonder scoring is down for them when they don't make it tough on opposing goalies. "You can't stop what you can't see," it is often said. Opposing goalies have seen a heck of a lot this year with no one parking out front. They have refused to crash the net, either as a group or via instructions from the coaching staff.
