So all the folks who wanted Perron acquired, how are you feeling now? I'm not even rubbing it in. Just asking.
This is the guy I saw in Edmonton. Streaky as balls. When he isn't scoring, doesn't bring much else to the table. Sound familiar?
He's a poor man's James Neal. - 87_71_11_29
I'm fine with Perron. Only other top 6 W on the team is Hornqvist. I just wish JR tried Sutter first in the trade and a 2nd instead of a first. |

If you take Tampa's top 6, they amount to 357 points, compared to Pittsburgh's top 6, you get 315. I use Tampa because they are the highest scoring team in the league. And that is totalling Perron's entire season, including points from EDM. One would hope he would excel a little better in a full season in Pittsburgh, so we can assume his numbers will go up. Comeau and Hornqvist both missed nearly 20 games... so you can assume that number will go up. So I would estimate the Pens top 6 to, not necessarily be right with Tampa, but to be in the vicinity of 335-345. There is nothing wrong with that top 6 at all.
The problem, like you said before, is with depth, when the guys in the top 6 miss games, the other guys (Downie, even Sutter) step up and put points up to help, but NO ONE in the bottom 6 can help. By properly evaluating talent and getting rid of terrible hockey players like Lapierre, Adams, Sill, etc... and replacing them with adequate hockey players, that can contribute.. (which because most of our drafts were spent on defense, must be acquired via FA.) you search for the bargain players, the comeau's, fehrs, brian boyles of the game. And if you can maybe acquire a veteran presence like JJ, do it, it will help BALANCE out the roster with a trickle down effect, while players like Kap, Sunq, and maybe even Zlobin try to improve their game in WBS. - j.boyd919
Since you bring up Tampa, I will play along. What differentiates TB from Pittsburgh is the fact they have an embarrassment about of young talent at forward. Stamkos is on the same level as Crosby and Malkin. They have Johnson, Kucherov, Palat, Killorn, Drouin and another Russian sounding name that starts with Names .... We have Beau Bennett. They have done their job developing players through their farm system. Something we aren't close to doing at forward. I would rather have their lineup over ours. |

How do you know JR didn't try to make a deal involving Sutter? |

I'm still fine with it. Obviously frustrated by streakiness but but 12 goals and 3 shootout goals in half a season and plays with an edge. Still better than any wing on ream outside Hornqvist and fills a top 6 role. If anyone besides Crosby, Hornqvist, or Sutter was scoring it wouldn't be as noticeable.
I mean we haven't even had a Malkin goal in what 17, 18 games. |

I think we would have heard about it by now. I would have been shopping Sutter on the block until he was gone. This game is too painful to watch. I'm going to dinner. |

Tampa has also done a lot of losing up until now. Made the playoffs in 2 of the last 7. Yes they've done a nice job of developing some young forwards, but they have been drafting high and losing lots of games.
I agree the Pens have basically mangled the draft and development department, but the Bolts haven't been close to the Pens in success the last 5/6 years. |

I understand that. But they are extremely thin at homegrown defensemen, which the penguins are not. Their defense aside from Hedman.. sucks. Which is why they spend their free agent dough on defensemen.. carle, garrison, stralman, etc. There are more than one way to build a roster is what I'm saying. While the Lightning spend money on D using kids on elc at forward.. the pens are the opposite which should be using their kids on D on elcs... while we spend on forwards. It can be done and does not have to revolve around trading our 1 of our 2 best players. |

It's a lot easier to play young forwards on a contending team then a bunch of young defensemen. Learning curve is much steeper at NHL. Never understood why we overloaded at D when several times (Morrow, Pouliot) it didn't look like we picked the best available player anyways. |

Perron teases you. Has good hands but can't shoot for $h*t. He strikes me as a guy wasting his talent without working on what it really matters the most: basics/positioning.
I wouldn't pay him a dime above $4M/year. |

True dat. Rutherford likely would be satisified with Joe Thorton straight up. |

I definitely agree about the learning curve for defensemen. I honestly believe Shero did it because he knows teams covet finding the next Doughty/Karlsson/Letang. . Pretty sure he stockpiled them as trade chips for deadline deals. I don't agree with it, but if that's what you have... you play with it. |
