I think that's probably close to what Buffalo would want. If you're the Sabres, McDavid is a huge building block. If he's traded, you need to fill a ton of holes with the return.
I'd want Simmonds, Couturier, Sanheim, Gostisbehere and both 1st rounders this year, myself. - Jsaquella
Unless G and/or Jake are involved... nobody's giving up 1st-overall for picks and a collection of half-developed/undeveloped kids.
3 days until the U18 Worlds starts! First game on Thursday.
It'll be a good chance to see some of the guys that might still be on the board with the Flyers pick first. Barzal on the Canadian Roster. Hanifin and Werenski on the US.
Also a couple that might be around for the second. Depending on where it falls, it could be Jeremy Roy in the early-mid 20s, or, if he has a good tournament, Anthony Beauvillier could move up in to the late first round. Chances are he'll be playing on Barzal's wing, so he could make a good case for himself.

That's probably what they'd demand, but if you're moving one of them, the other assets are going to be limited. If I'm Buffalo McDavid>Voracek and a pick
The trade was Peter Forsberg, Steve Duschene, Kerry Huffman, Mike Ricci, Ron Hextall, Chris Simon, Philly’s first-round pick in 1993 and 1994, and $15 million in cash, for Lindros - MJL
It is always more painful each time I see that, forget about the picks in addition to Simon.... Dont you think the arena would have been built with Lindros ?

I think it would take a franchise-level player at least to get the conversation started. Even then, they're gonna ask for all the rest... because McD is likely going to be a better player than G/Jake, for longer, and for cheaper initially... and the marketing bonanza that they would be giving up in the process.

The arena would have been built with or without Lindros. He did help ticket sales, but the team's financial stability and history of drawing fans was more of a factor.
From NHL.com
Lombardi raised the possibility of buying out center Mike Richards, who has four years remaining on his contract. Richards was demoted to the American Hockey League in January and was a non-factor when recalled for the final 11 games.
"I think you can figure that out," Lombardi said. "Those will be one of the things I think I have to meet with him face to face … the player has to hear it from me first. How I can answer this? It's a possibility."

What are the cap implications with the recapture penalty on buying him out?
Also, if we could conceivably trade Vinny, would you offer him 2 years at like $2M to be your 4C?

It might. If you had a guy like that, you'd certainly ask.

Yeah, I think the deal I proposed is probably fair value (and too much for the Flyers to give) but Buffalo would need that young guy (preferably a center a la Seguin) to get the talks started. And even then, you'd have to throw in a boatload.

I think that the buy out eliminates the recapture penalties.
No. I wouldn't consider bringing Richards back. He got embarrassed, sent to the AHL. Came back and not only played poorly, seemed to lack intensity. If the best he can do is skate circles after being publicly shamed, well, there's no spot for him here.
Maybe the conditioning issues played a role, or maybe the wear and tear of being a little guy playing a big guy's game have taken their toll. Either way, he was a highly ineffective player for LA after rejoining the team, and the Flyers have plenty of young centers.

I was gonna say that maybe a buyout would wake him up regarding the conditioning issues, but there have been other attempts that he disregarded, and he is already 30.

No thanks. - tangent_man
With the players the Flyers have in place, it's just not worth it.

The 2 picks ended up being Jocelyn Thibault and Wade Belak, no huge loss there. Other than giving up Forsberg, the deal was a steal for the Flyers. The cash was no big deal nor did it hurt the franchise, two years into his career it was obvious that Mike Ricci was not going to be a #1 center, Duchesne was basically a younger version of Mark Streit, Hextall was a good goalie, but coming off a ton of injuries, Simon was never going to be more than a 3rd line forward and Huffman was Kerry Huffman.

Actually, Nolan Baumgartner was the other pick, not Belak.
The Flyers probably make the playoffs sooner without the trade. Huffman was coming off a very solid season, and Ricci would have been a great 3rd C behind Brind'Amour and Forsberg.
Also, I think that the Flyers would have picked differently than Thibault. Russ Farwell was a big WHL guy, and Adam Deadmarsh and Brendan Witt were on the board when Thibault was picked.
Baumgartner was a WHL guy and a good prospect at the time, so it's reasonable to expect he would have been Farwell's choice.

Yeah, they probably make the playoffs sooner, I'd agree with that. My point was just that, other than Forsberg, they didn't give up any assets that were remotely irreplaceable to acquire a franchise center.
