It only takes one incident to make history. Gotta start somewhere, right? - chimpira
So, let me ask you:
If Letang wasn't in the position he was in and simply slams into the boards with his side and gets up shaky but has no effects past that shift, do you care about that hit and similar ones (which I can't even think of a similar one) as much? |

Yes. I care about that hit and similar ones. There is a reason they started calling this hybrid icing now.

Hybrid icing is a joke. They only call it on plays where there is clear-cut icing. On plays where the players are neck-and-neck (like the Pitkanen play) they DON'T call it, and those are the only dangerous plays. I guess they should just blow play dead when 2 players race for a puck on a corner dump as well.
I'm not saying I'm happy Letang is hurt. But "that type of hit" probably results in injury about the same amount as a "normal" hit. God forbid players should have to pay attention to their surrounding and get hit in this game. |

I would point out the Maple Leafs' "July 1 is our draft day" strategy for who all of this cash is suddenly going to be used for. Anyone who has looked thoroughly at this season's UFA class should be a lot less optimistic.
Rather, the models all seem to be of teams drafting and developing players who contribute to a winning on-ice product before they reach the end of their second contract. The team who are still competitive identify which of those players to re-sign and who they can afford to part with. Chicago is a good example; many of their guys from their first Cup got big pay days elsewhere but Chicago is still really good. Pittsburgh has not done well in this respect. Hell, they even brought back Eaton and Scuderi.
Getting younger in a hurry dos mean identifying who the team's nucleus should be and then quickly cashing out on other current players. So, let Kris Letang be the Brian Campbell of some other team. Let Kunitz be the Bollig or whoever fits the bill. Perron. Dumoulin. Trade them all; maybe if those players yield 8 assets, five of them turn into a younger core that will mesh with Malkin, Olli, Derrick, PH, and 87. - Johnny Wrath
You and I will always disagree on Letang. I have no problem with him or his contract other than health.
But overall I agree. July 1 cannot be draft day. Since this is a strong draft this year, I think it would be wise to try to trade Kunitz and Sutter and hope to get as many 2nd round picks as possible. And of course, I would love to somehow trade up and get a pick in the first round.

It's a grey area, whistle goes to defender if he has the step over the other and the tie. |

I agree we should basically expose the entire bottom half of the team for draft picks. I still think Soderberg should be their focus the minute FA starts. |

Again, this is the only time when a violent collision can occur and is the only time when it is possible to not call it. Hybrid icing should be done where the referee can choose to call the no-touch icing only if a defender has the best chance to get the puck and feels that violent collision may occur. When a defender is taking his sweet time to touch up with no one near him, make him skate the extra few feet. |

Does it prevent every collision, no, does it prevent most, yes. That's what rules changes do. They actually do a good job. Always a human element so there is room for error. |

No, that's my point. It prevents ZERO collisions. It does not get called in the (very) rare instance where its intended use is applicable.
I'm sorry, but this is a violent sport played by large, muscular, athletic players at a high speed where they are allowed to (within reason) make bodily contact. Players are going to get hurt. It sucks when a player on your team gets hurt, but it's going to happen. Until we put all of these players in a bubble or eliminate physical contact, players are going to get hurt. Where do we draw the line? |

I disagree actually. It seems like they call an icing even if it's a close race or if the forward even has a step on the defenseman at the dots. |

I haven't seen this, but if what you're saying is true, I'm glad they've negated one of the most exciting plays in the game and hard work/hustle by forecheckers. |
