He's been in the league for 19 seasons and yes, he does play "on the edge" at times. He's a player who is a power forward and players like that, especially in today's NHL, are prone to suspensions on plays where an accidental play where no harm was intended results in an injury due to a level of carelessness. But to say he's a predatory player who wanted to intentionally injure Letang, as some have done, seems far-fetched to me.

Letang's hit looked worse that it was and Burmistrov had the puck. Letang was engaged on him while Burmistrov was going towards the boards with the puck trying to separate him from the puck. While Doan's hit on Letang was not necessary. Letang didn't have the puck. There was nothing to be gained by that hit no matter what Doan says.

There is finishing your check and there is senseless hitting when the player doesn't have the puck. It's careless and it's senseless. I don't know what coach tells his players, but I am sure there have been calls to run someone over. If I were Dave Tippett stuck in Glendale, I would probably call that up more often.
