While your point does have merit that I agree with, you are looking at a very small sample size. If you have poor possession stats but face a bad goalie on an off nights and win 4-2, that's one game out of 82, which will not heavily skew the numbers. The idea of any statistical study is to used such a wide sample size as to account for any anomalies.
Granted, I'm no fan of possession stats or any other hocus pocus numbers. But the idea behind them is solid. - jmatchett383
I'm not against the stats except Corsi & all things related. If people are not going to embrace the plus minus how can they say Corsi has relevance, they are both the same thing for different actions? I always say that there is a lot more info that they could document but don't that would give more accurate assessments of players & in turn teams. There are just too many unknowns in hockey to put faith in the Analytics in their current form.
You cannot assess a human playing sports in a reactionary position without wiring his nervous system.
How do they account for fatigue, injury, boredom, sickness, love, & anything else that affects a human performing sport? They say it all washes out so basically it all 'averages' out. That's pretty advanced! |

Well when you make comments like that you're just inviting rangers fans to come into this thread - rangerdanger94
I say it about every team, so there ya go. Don't feel sad, I want the jumbo tron to fall on center ice for puck drop for the next Sens-Flyers game. |

This is nothing new or Rangers-specific for him. He is like this to every team (even the Penguins at times). So please don't take it that way. - jmatchett383
Well if he's making comments like that then nobody here should be surprised when fans of other teams pour into this thread and create a mess. I'm a douche to the islanders fans and they come into the Rangers thread as a result and I'm okay with it because I expect it. |

Like I said, there's no way that anything you post will be met with anything but animosity due to the current playoff match-up (as well as an unfortunate guilty by association pin) right now. I'd just advise laying off for a few. - jmatchett383
I'd say it's more the fact that while there might be some good intentioned Rags fans, the majority are not and at this point, posters are tired of being inundated with Rags trolls so any NYR poster will not be well-received. They were also the only ones to come over en masse before the series matchup so that's indicative in itself.

Glad you understand.
Yep that was me, please don't sugar coat what I said; because I hope for purely the most brutal career ending injuries this league has ever known to happen every game; so there play with that for a while.
I am certainly not worried about being classy, but at least I don't pretend to. - nbartley9

Well, I'm no expert on the stats, and for the most part I don't even look at them, but I do know that next year, the NHL itself is taking some measures to more appropriately quantify some nonsense dealing with advanced stats. So I think the league realizes that the metrics are important but need refinement, which could lead to a better usage of them. |

It's getting a little annoying even to me seeing Rangers fans pour into any blog that gives the Penguins a chance or doesn't predict the Rangers to win the whole thing. Why the need for validation from fans of other teams? |

Its not just 1 opposing force. Bad possession doesn't win only because you face good goalies. Prime example is the #1 team with most wins in the NHL this year and having terrible possession stats. Possession is not needed to win for a multitude of reasons:
1. Bad goaltending against
2. Fast transition game that out paces the other team, minimum possession needed
3. Bad penalties by the higher possession team leads to PP time for the other team. The other team could have a bad powerplay like the Rangers do and have bad possession on the PP but still can get that PPG to change the outcome of the game.
Conversely, LA Kings had the best possession of the league. That can be counteracted by lack of good scoring chances. A great game by the opposing goalie. Great defense blocking tons of shots. Terrible shooting by the players shooting wide, high, or basically not scoring. A powerplay that holds the puck for 2 minutes and never shoots.
There are too many opposing forces that counteract individual advanced stats like possession in the game of hockey. Baseball has too many set outcomes from what a specific players does. Not in hockey. What a player does in hockey is directly countered by what an opposing player does virutally every play. |

Is there a way to block certain peoples posts?
I think its a pretty good call. He's played really well in Wilkes. I wish he didnt get injured in his first pro game so we could see a little more of him in the NHL.
My only complaint is I dont think he is particularly fast and speed is one thing we need and Wilkes can provide us (Megna, Farnham, Kappy). |

So be the better man and ignore him if he's that bad. You're not obligated to reply to him. There are certain posters on the Flyers blog (and as of last night, one on here) whose posts I simply don't even read because it will just turn into a pissing match. |

Even the most optimistic Pens fans know this is a very unlikely series to win. That doesn't mean we are going to capitulate the series and hope for the team to forfeit to save the embarrassment as many of the Rags "fans" would like. And proportionally, I almost never see any Pens fans on the Rags blogs and the last one I saw was giving a prediction of the Rags in 5 for the series.

I thought all you guys said Kap or Sundy couldn't play playoffs as he played OS? That's what I remember early in the year when he first got sent? Now everyone is going nuts about if he plays or not in the NHL playoffs? |

Any player signed to an ELC who is under 20 can play up to the first 9 games of the season without his ELC kicking in (known as the slide rule). After that, he must be returned to his junior team (or, for European players, the AHL or his Euro club) for the duration of his club's season (excepting 18/19 year olds in the AHL). Once his club's season is over, there is what's known as an ATO that the player can sign to play with an NHL or AHL club for the remainder of that team's season/postseason. So, if Kapanen's season is done (which it is), he can sign an ATO with WB/S (which he has). He can be recalled by the Penguins for the playoffs, but if he plays more than 9 games with them, his ELC will kick in.
Confused enough? |

Soooo, going OS only changed his timeline not his options - he can still burn the ELC first year playing more than 9 games in the playoffs instead of the first month of the season. So what was all this other talk about not being able to play NHL playoffs?
Has anyone seen him play for WBS besides the goal that was on here? How is he going? |

With Wilson making fourteen forwards on the team and New York being so close to WBS, one could definitely conclude that he is going to play.
This would almost certainly signal Adams has played his last game. He was a good addition and helped the team win a cup but father time has caught up to him. Good luck to him. |

I wish
Yeah definitely a good call up. Guessing he will take Adams spot on 4th line. I agree I wish he didn't get hurt in the first game. Wasn't he the one who the team pranked by letting him go lead the skate onto the ice and they didn't follow him? Sutter was next in line laughing, so he cursed Wilson.
Megna ehhhh, Farnham I would have liked up earlier. Still feel like he could help out though. Great on the forecheck with his speed and he'd go straight for the puck even if Chara had the chance to send him into the next dimension. Guy is fearless. Haven't heard much on Kasperi other than that first game. Looks like he's gone scoreless in the past 2. |
