McDavid is so skilled that he could easily turn Rinaldo into a 15 point a year player.

Oh well. I hate the idea that because a guy signed a contract he should just "shut up and play"

The guy isnt happy. He is a fierce competitor. He has been extremely professional so far (over two seasons in his role now).

I could live with Vinny's getting another shot but with a different coach.
That way there are no excuses . He would have a fresh start to prove his value.
RJ on the other hand.. Well him and Berube can rent a charter and sail off into the sunset... And take Luke if they want

Or Bernie Parent or that guy who Gretzky called the best goalie he ever faced...What was his name?
- jmatchett383

For sure, Hextall was absolutely a team leader in Philly, I can't imagine he agrees with Berube's view on the subject.

Honestly, who is the "best player" from this group: Marner, Strome, Hanifin, Provorov
Who is the best player from this group: Barzal, Werenski, Crouse, Zacha, Connor

Since there is no true statistical way to compare them, "BEST" is a very subjective term.

I think players loosely fall into tiers. As I just said, I do agree that in later rounds it is so hard to forecast if and when the player would even make the NHL, that you go with your scouting report.

But early on, you HAVE to take into account your organizational depth. This is the reason we have no homegrown defense on our roster today. The organization didn't realize you had to make defense a priority until a few years ago.

- TheGreat28

From the first group, I'd lean to Marner or Strome. From the second group, Barzal, hands down.

Taking into account the Flyers organizational depth, they need help at every position. They really need top six talent, badly. in later rounds, sure, if you have a lack of defensemen or wingers, maybe focus there instead of BPA, but if you're picking 7thm you don't choose by organization need, you take the best possible guy.

Looking at the "tiers" the guys slated to go 3-6 are Hanifin, Strome, Marner and Provorov. I think Barzal would be in the hunt had he not been hurt to start the season, If he's there at 7, I think he's the best choice, assuming the other 4 are gone, along with McDavid and Eichel.

I don't see drafting Barzal, a pure center, there as an indictment of Couturier. He's the best guy there.

Yes. Yes it was. That's why Hextall won the Conn Smythe in 1987.

He might. The thing I don't like about Sutter is the way he manages to wear out his welcome so quickly. There's no denying his talent as a coach, or his ability to think and teach the game, but he's got a short shelf life.

Let's apply Berube logic to Berube:

Good coaches get their teams in the playoffs. Period. The players aren't an excuse. Injuries aren't an excuse -- battle through it.

It's been hinted that Sutter is planning to retire in a couple years, and that Lombardi will not fire him out of respect

I personally happen to agree with your ratings of the players. But you know I've been a huge Strome, Marner and Barzal fan from the beginning. But the reality is that there are many other knowledgeable analysts and scouts that have differing opinions, especially in that second group.

The other problem for me is that you just don't see straight prospect for prospect trades. Please, someone correct me if I'm wrong with some examples. But teams fall in love with their top prospects. Yes, they'll trade for a vet. But in terms of trading prospect for prospect, it's the devil that you know.

Do you think the Jets would trade Ehlers straight up for Schenn (even if Schenn were a little further developed)?

Arizona could use a center to play with Duclair and Domi. The Flyers really need a LW. Would they trade Perlini for Schenn or Laughton?

You look at a JVR for Schenn trade as an example. But really, both players had fallen out of favor with their teams. Do you think either club would have traded the player had that not been the case?
