The Lecavalier situation is a tough one. If they fired Berube, it'd be a win in Lecavalier's eyes, thus leading him to want to stick around. Do you really want to give an under-performing (although potentially under-utilized) player who calls out your coach and his decisions a win like that? Kinda like letting the inmates run the asylum.
I say they figure out how to fix that situation before dealing with anything else. Hopefully someone will want him at half salary. If we can find any takers, keeping $2.5M on the books for 3 more years is much better than paying the buyout. - Coleman
i will not be able to contain my chortling, or self urination, if the flyers keep berube solely to spite vinny. |

I want Berube and Lecavalier gone. Getting rid of Berube isn't catering to VL. |

Both still might happen. Chief's 1 year is a lot more tolerable than Vinny's 3 years (or however many are left). |

Yeah, the trade for last season and the up coming season and probably the year after, since Umburger might still be around, was terrible. I don't think they accounted for Hartnell's leadership. I think they thought he "kept things light" in the locker room, but completely undervalued the fact that players followed his lead in playing loose and attacking aggressively, instead of waiting tentatively in on-ice situations.
Hexy clearly still values the future cap relief more than either player in the trade. - kellyblaise7
I think he said that because he didn't want to poop on Umberger. The difference in ability between those players is as big as the Grand Canyon. You're talking about trading a top line LW for a fringe NHLer. |

If that scenario is true, whereby they keep Vinny simply to get him to walk away from his contract.....that is downright Machiavellian.
I think they trade him for nothing this offseason. |

There's zero chance that that is why they are keeping Berube. VL is not going to retire just because Berube is still the coach. The Flyers will either find a trade partner who can make a trade that is palatable for Hextall or they will buy him out or (least likely in my idiot opinion) they will start the season with VL on the roster and tell him to be the professional he's supposed to be. |

I would also make that trade again. They're going to need that cap relief down the when they might be a contender again. Do you think Hartnell is the difference between them making the playoffs and not making it? I don't think he is.
Again, my idiot opinion and I reserve the right to be wrong.

Yeah, that's probably true too. And what GM ever really admits they made a terrible trade? Maybe Chiarelli admitted that about the Seguin trade and Hexy made a "note to self: DO NOT ADMIT bad trade."
But Hexy definitely made the trade being enticed by future relief more than Umburger IMO. |

yeah. i cant see it being the reasoning. but even the notion of it is funny in a sick sort of way.
trading vinny for nothing, with no or minimal salary retained, would be another feather in hextalls cap. |

It's not the norm by any means, but if Scott Gomez could bring Chris Higgins and a reclamation project known as Ryan McDonagh, I guess we could actually get something for VLC. |

I didn't have a problem with moving Hartnell. I had a problem with what they brought back.
I bet CBJ could move Hartnell now for a 2nd without taking back any salary. |

Considering the coaching staff and GM both admitted the team missed Hartnell's leadership and they both also placed partial blame of poor road record on lack of leadership, I think Hartnell could've definitely made a difference. That coupled with his on-ice production too. But I don't think it would've gotten them far in the playoffs or anything.
Rather have a mulligan on the JVR trade more than the Hartsy trade though. Just my opinion. |

Totally agree.
Was today the ONLY day this off season to fire Berube?
Like, if the guy Hextall has identified (whoever it is) becomes available in 2 weeks, can Hextall NOT call another press conference and fire Berube?
There are some coaches, whose situation is tenuous, that Hextall MIGHT like to hire. Why turf your guy when you don't have a replacement ready to hire?
Sounds smart to me. - johndewar
one thing he made clear: another coach's availability is not related to deciding what happens w/ chief (not that i believe that) so it would be difficult to play it like that. i think he can still do what ever he wants, i'm just a little concerned he doesn't know yet. he said he had a lot of things to go through but he watched the team all year. |

Other than the Berube thing, I thought he was pretty forthcoming. Says he wants to add a forward with skill and upgrade the defense but won't be trading young players to create small windows - PhillySportsGuy
So this is what having a smart GM feels like... |

If we end up with a better coach by the draft, I won't really care much when it was done. But I feel ya though, I'm a little ansty for something new. Can't wait till Saturday's lottery. |
