When he was asked how he felt about it, he complained about the process. Not the player they're going to get. He actually in the same quote that Eichel is a hell of a player.

I've heard interviews and read interviews where he raved about Eichel prior to the draft. Then he went and clarified after the draft because people on twatter and journalists were getting out of hand with isolated quotes.
We're getting a damn fine player.
We'll probably get one or two more over the summer.
Then, we'll watch hockey.

He shouldn't apologize to the fan base for not getting the best guy out there? That's not a dig at Eichel. It's the truth. Right now, McDavid is the best player available. It's not like Eichel hasn't heard this for the last 3 years of his life. It's part of why he wanted to play in the OHL at one point. He wanted to play in the same league and head to head against him to prove to people he was just as good, if not better.

Unfortunately for him, the CHL rules wouldn't allow him to. He would have had to play in the QMJHL which is a whole different ball park, so he stuck with his original plan and went the College route.

But continue to make mountains out of mole hills.

My hopes are that Murray is trying to fashion a team like LA or Boston when they were at the top of their game, rather than pray to god your 1 or 2 hotshot players stay healthy and tear through the playoffs. If someone is injured, you plug in the best guy from Rochester or slot someone up and keep rolling. I think the modern NHL paradigm is going to turn players over faster and hope they play more physical....keep your cupboards constantly stocked by trading away players when the time is right, even if it seems like a bad idea at the time...as long as you have a suitable replacement in the minors or are getting something similar back with an upside in trade. I think Murray knowing his scouting well could set us up for a long time.
