so i've pitted beefeater against bombay's regular gin in another awesome taste test.

iirc, they were about the same price. maybe a couple dollars difference at most.

i feel like the first ever gin & tonic i had was beefeater in a small old fashioned italian restaurant and i remember really liking it in a weird way and that probably started my whole gin fetish in the first place.

anyway, i'm a little disappointed in the bombay regs. from everything i'd been told it was going to be super junipery and really provide that slap in the tongue that i look for when i drink gin or a stong IPA. it kind of is and it kind of does, but my problem with it is as much as i love black pepper i don't really want it in my gin. not only does this smell of black pepper but it tastes of it too. other than that, it's okay. it's a fine gin and i'll finish the bottle and all but i think it will be drank more on a saturday when there's an afternoon flyers game and i just want to get really shitfaced. this would be easier to drink in a G&T. it's not really conducive to the way i like to drink gin, where the only other ingredient is 3 cubes of ice.

the beefeater is nice and junipery and tastes like a nice traditional gin. there isn't much to say about it besides the fact that is smells amazing and tastes like a great old gin. lemon hits you at the end. real solid gin and i'm guessing i was right when i was a little kicksave and this is great for a gin & tonic or probably any gin cocktail.

so the winner here is the beefeater by early knockout. like round fucking one.

however, neither of them are better than the bombay sapphire. i will have to test the beefeater vs. the tanqueray in the future to see who currently holds 2nd place.

as it stands now, sapphire is number one, tanqueray and beefeater are fighting for the two and three spots, tanqueray 10 is in fourth, and bombay regs is bringing up the rear.

i feel like licorice is a major reason why the sapphire is so far ahead of these other gins. licorice.

thank you, friend.

every review i read tries to trash bombay sapphire saying it's "overrated" and "not worthy of its high perch", etc, probably because it's so popular and they think it's edgy to act like it's not "craft" enough or whatever, but i can't seem to find anything to beat it.

i had a couple gin and tonics back to back at a bar on saturday (yes, i was trashed waaaay before i got to that party where the kid got stuck in the box) and i did sapphire first and tanqueray second and sapphire is just better. it's better straight and it's better in a G&T. i will admit tanqueray catches up considerably in the G&T, but drinking it straight is no contest, sapphire wins by 50 miles in a 10 mile race.

i still have to try junipero, the botanist, plymouth (i'd have to go navy stength), sipsmith (but only the VJOP variety), and beefeater 24. but so far nothing has beaten sapphire.

there's a gin called portland dry gin 33 that only uses juniper and nothing else and i want it so bad but apparently it doesn't distribute very far from.. you guessed it, portland.

the regular bombay will always suffer looks-wise because the bombay sapphire is such a beautiful bottle.

i mean, who wouldn't want this on display in their lighted liquor cabinet?

i was always yuge on trying hendricks until i realized that what i like about gin is the stinging smack of the juniper. so now my life's goal in regards to gin is to find the most juniper-forward gin i can get my hands on on a regular basis and make it my jawn. sort of like buffalo trace is for me in the bourbon realm.

i'll tell you what, researching gin is waaaaaay harder than researching bourbon. first of all, everybody who reviews gin mixes it with tonic in their reviews. secondly, there are just way fewer people reviewing gin than whiskey.
