the Leafs prospect cupboard is bare!! I think they should be offering up the #4 overall. Ask the Jets for both their first rounders ( would give the Leafs 3 first round picks ) ask for one of Hellybuck or Comrie ( allows the Leafs to give Bernier another year or two to see if he can be that true number one, if not you have a top rated goalie prospect waiting ) and finally ask for one of Petan, Armia, Lemieux, Burmistrov, or Kosmachuck. No way your getting Eihlers or Morrisey so dont go there. |

exactly what the oilers are looking to ship out for this driftwood - dt99999
between klefbolm, marcinin, nurse etc,, they actually have pretty good depth at d-prospects.
to your other point, I would've considered the wood as driftless |

Dion Phaneuf (3 million retained per year)
Leafs draft Hanifin, they'll be going young so they should be alright capwise even tho they eat a big chunk of Phaneufs salary.
Edmonton upgrades their defense and goaltending, in 3 years Phaneuf will only be worth 4 million per year anyway. Salary retained helps minimize the cap problems Edmonton will have in the near future. |

ROR should not be on the leafs radar. He's by no means old, but we should be targetting young players / prospects. Grab a guy like ROR which you will pay handsomely for, by the time we are competing (hopefully that is) he'll be near 30 or 30.
Ppl will say stuff like "24/25 is old?? " and it's not...but when you are YEARS away from even being respectful (claim we are not all you want, we are building from scratch here) than you need to target as young as possible.
Once you have the young core in place, you sign UFAs to insulate them. So pretty much the opposite of what the leafs have been doing for years. I'd rather see them acquire prospects/picks if anything. - clark_griswold
You still need good forwards who play D. You still need those older veterans on a contending team to get to be a contender. No one said anything about Patrick Sharp being 30 when Toews and Kane were coming into their own. Same with Hossa. If you can get a prime asset now that can mentor and lead, you do it.

who's he gonna mentor? the only person on this team who SHOULD be there when the smoke clears is Morgan Rielly |

Oil had vets...saying they didn't is a huge misconception. And ppl jump on the oil but fact is that is how long it takes to build from the ground up. Buffalo and TO are / will be examples of that |

I like the trade.. but not the retained salary.
I doubt the leafs are retaining 6 years of salary.. Nonis is gone.
It would have to be a cap dump coming back instead thats shorter..max 3 years.

I think he would bolt the minute he became a UFA. |

Wishful thinking, but I want to dream here. Edmonton is so weak on D, but has the start of an amazing offence. So, if there was any chance.......
I would offer up our 4th, Reilly, Phaneuf (some salary retained) and another D prospect for Edmonton's 1st overall. From the sounds of it, Yotes are going for Strome, leaving Hanifin for Edmonton with the 4th pick. That right there shores up Edmonton's D fairly well, all in one deal. Besides, if the Oilers want to become a cup contender, they better strike now before there is not a chance in Haitis that they can afford RNH, Yakupov, Hall, etc. on the payroll
Leafs are in major rebuild, we need a franchise player to build around. If there was a chance at ANY deal for McDavid, I would be throwing everything in, including the kitchen sink to make it happen.
Yes, again I know I am dreaming, but sometimes its nice to do........

I was thinking the same this - well close anyway....
I do not think Colorado would send back a 2nd and TO would eat 1/2 of Phaneuf's salary ...... so
Phaneuf (at 1/2 his salary), Bozak and Nashville's 1st for ROR - SensnRBs
If the Leafs are eating salary, I would like to see Colorado's 1st in there as well. |

you could offer our ENTIRE team plus the 4th and they'd say no. Why? our team finished 4th last.

I like the idea of adding vets to take some pressure on young players. but...
leafs don't have a future toews/kane. they need to trade their highest value assets to aquire draft picks to become these guys.
I prefer what tallon has done in Fla and Chicago. Sign UFA's or acquire salary dumps on the cheap to bring in veterans. |

Why do people assume that Bernier/Reimer are assets? its pretty clear to everyone else that goaltending is also a major problem in Toronto - Ross77
I would not say it's a major problem, but a problem none the less. |
