Leon Draisaitl + 1st 2016
for
Jonathan Bernier
+
Dion Phaneuf (3 million retained per year)
Leafs draft Hanifin, they'll be going young so they should be alright capwise even tho they eat a big chunk of Phaneufs salary.
Edmonton upgrades their defense and goaltending, in 3 years Phaneuf will only be worth 4 million per year anyway. Salary retained helps minimize the cap problems Edmonton will have in the near future. - diesel2086
If the leafs retain salary a 1st in 2016 is coming to the leafs.

That's probably too steep on Toronto's end. Phaneuf isn't worth Draisatl but it's close, and Bernier is probably worth more than Draisatl but not by a whole lot.
I wouldn't trade for Bernier, there are lots of goalie options this summer and the goaltending will improve if the Oilers actually get some defencemen.

Why do people assume that Bernier/Reimer are assets? its pretty clear to everyone else that goaltending is also a major problem in Toronto - Ross77
they are assets - just not great ones.
and the reason this is discussed is because out of 30 teams in the league its fair to say that only about 10-12 have proven elite level goaltending.
would Bernier be better than what Edmonton currently has... I would think most would say yes. (not being a fan boy...
but it is extremely annoying to repeatedly read and hear that every single Leaf player has zero or negative value, that every Leaf prospect the moment they are drafted magically decrease in value.
Bernier could be quite attractive to a team such as the Oilers or the Sharks. Not saying that they necessarily want him.. .but don't waste "ink" on these pages putting on statements that they are worth nothing.
Ask yourself a simple question... if that player is put on waivers - would he be claimed?

Hey got it to work lol
Anyway Bernier is in no way worth a 3rd overall pick. Think about what we got him for, he is at best worth an extra 2nd round pick at this point (if that even).
The deal of Phaneuf & Bernier for Draisatl is worth it with that salary retention but I would not under any circumstance retain any contract that is more than 3 years long. I would rather take back a bad contract as we can afford that in the short term and not have a $3-$4M cap penalty when we are ready to compete. |

my guess is that Shanahan and Co. will not want to eat salary... but would prefer a compensating CAP dump - in this case perhaps Fayne - particularly as Bernier will be relatively cheap.

Exactly. That is the reason we didn't waive Dion or Phil. They have value, they may be at the low end due to their performance ( not their faults) or contracts but they have value.

Maybe I overestimate Bernier's value. I don't really know if the Oilers/Leafs are good trading partners, unless you want to trade Rielly for Draisatl |

to the extent the leafs can trade veterans to the oilers to accelerate the oilers' path to competiveness, they can be good trading partners. That deal is lateral move for the leafs, fills one hole but creates another.
realistically, edm may be able to find better value for their assets from teams like chi, la, bos etc - teams that will be forced to move salary.

Yeah, in terms of goalies you could see Chicago (Crawford), Detroit (Howard), St. Louis (Elliott), Vancouver (Miller), New York (Talbot) all willing to trade a goalie, and for some teams they probably just want salary relief and a draft pick |

I'm not sure why everyone is surprised we keep winning the lottery. Sure the odds are small when you put blinders on and just look at Edmonton, but take them off and compare the odds of Edmonton getting all those first overall picks during that span vs. the odds of it happening to any other team, and Edmonton would be at the top. No one has been cumulatively as bad year-to-year, so from that perspective, this run was actually the most likely result.
Want to win 4/6 lotteries? Let in the most goals and score the least cumulatively over 6 seasons. I guarantee you, you will have no sympathy for any other 'sorta-bad' team that complains it wasn't fair. |

As much as the whole hockey world is licking their chops thinking that the oilers will be trading LD now, forget it. Mac T wont do it.
The plan for what the oilers will look like when then are competitive, which was presented at the season ticket holder meeting, was to have three scoring lines and a checking line to handle crazy D-zone starts.
Think about the centers he has now (Nuge, McDavid, Draisaitle, Lander). There is no better foundation for three scoring lines + checking than that. If anyone will be going it will be Yak, and only after he has a breakout season gifted to him with via gravy minutes against 3rd rate players and lots of PP time.
I also expect the oil to draft A D man with their second pick in the 1st and their first pick in the 2nd round, and maybe trade the others for a complimentary winger, but maybe not.
They will most likely draft and develop their own D man from this draft, and go full out next off-season on veteran D man in free agency to surround Nurse, Klefbom and Shultz.
As much as it will frustrate everyone, they will take as many picks at they can get in this deep draft, fill some holes using mediocre UFA with the new leverage they might have, and start making huge moves next year. |

I had to read about how all the leaf rentals had sooooo much value and how much the leafs should get by trading them ( Franson, Santo and Winnik ) how are they playing now? horrible!!! I dont think Bernier is attactive to teams, all he has proven is that he is widely inconsistant. as for your waivers comment, comon!! there is a huge diference from a waiver claim to trading players for assets, give your head a shake |

Oil had vets...saying they didn't is a huge misconception. And ppl jump on the oil but fact is that is how long it takes to build from the ground up. Buffalo and TO are / will be examples of that - clark_griswold
I think he meant "good" vets. Name one the Oil have or had that could mentor their young players. |

Crawford Howard and Elliott cant even hold their jobs on teams with good defensive systems. They are passed their prime and bernier is much better options. Talbot looked great this year and I think Vancouver wishes Miller was in net for them right now...if anyone they will be moving Lack...or maybe Markstrom. |

Why not throw in Reiley and our 4th too since ROR is apparently Rick Nash status - Seitch2
It is funny how much people over value ROR. Is this because the Leafs have interest in him? He has not proven himself to be a top line centre yet. He has to reach an elite status. Maybe that could be his ceiling or it could be what we have seen so far, which is a defensively sound centre who is basically a larger, slightly improved Tyler Bozak. His ceiling is most likely a Mike Peca type of player.
We want to get rid of a top 10 scoring winger and a strong, number 2 Dman for ROR as the return? Then we feel the need to sweeten the pot? His own team took him to arbitration because they thought he was overpaid at 6.5 million. We should have offer sheeted him for 8 mil so we could complain like we did about Clarkson while we got our man. Don't hang this kid with the Clarkson 2.0 gallows. |

.924 in 57 games for Crawford...
Howard's had a .910 the last two seasons and isn't a great option
Elliott had a .917 in 46 games
These guys are all 30, not exactly passed their prime. Talbot might cost you the most. |

Calgary needs to advance to the West finals before its the 15th pick (assuming Pittsburgh doesn't win 2 rounds as well) |

ROR on a bare bones team like the leafs will be for the next few years will not be a good vet either. And is he even a vet? love the way he plays, but you can't tell me he's a vet in the mold of what say Iginla brings to the avs |
