As much as the whole hockey world is licking their chops thinking that the oilers will be trading LD now, forget it. Mac T wont do it.
The plan for what the oilers will look like when then are competitive, which was presented at the season ticket holder meeting, was to have three scoring lines and a checking line to handle crazy D-zone starts.
Think about the centers he has now (Nuge, McDavid, Draisaitle, Lander). There is no better foundation for three scoring lines + checking than that. If anyone will be going it will be Yak, and only after he has a breakout season gifted to him with via gravy minutes against 3rd rate players and lots of PP time.
I also expect the oil to draft A D man with their second pick in the 1st and their first pick in the 2nd round, and maybe trade the others for a complimentary winger, but maybe not.
They will most likely draft and develop their own D man from this draft, and go full out next off-season on veteran D man in free agency to surround Nurse, Klefbom and Shultz.
As much as it will frustrate everyone, they will take as many picks at they can get in this deep draft, fill some holes using mediocre UFA with the new leverage they might have, and start making huge moves next year. - gravis1982
The worst thing the Edmonton organization could do is replicate the mistakes other teams have made in the past (Pittsburgh, Tampa). Yes, they both won a cup... A cup. Every team wants that, but teams would rather have multiple cups.
What mistake am I referring to? Stacking so much money up in one strength and hoping the rest will be filled in. The thought of having 3-4 elite/super star centers is enticing, but having that means many, MANY holes elsewhere. When players are younger it's not that big of a deal, but when they start getting bigger contracts thats when the problems start, which is normally when those players become more mature and produce. I would rather have a great team than a team full of potential superstars.
Majority of Stanley Cup champions don't always have the best player(s) in the league, they have great players that look even better because they win...Boston, LA, Chicago.
Currently Edmonton has large money tied up into Hall, RNH and Eberle. 2-3 years down the road that adds Yakupov, Draisaiti and now McDavid (no question max contract in 3 years). That doesn't even include possible resigning of defensive prospects.
Edmonton has 3 choices:
1) Keep everyone and see what happens.
5 years from now they may have made the playoffs once or twice, but they will be forced to purge big money for lesser value and start rebuilding again.
2) Trade a big contract star to fill weakness
They will get the most value out of Hall (injury concerns) and RNH. Eberle is more of a complimentary star and doesn't hold as much value. In this scenario they need to be traded to a team that can fit the large cap hit while getting good value now and not for tomorrow. Teams like Toronto, Florida, NJ, Winnipeg would fit that bill, but do they have what Edmonton needs or willing to give that up. Bubble teams will need to dump salary while giving up assets, which makes no sense for either team.
3) Trade entry level star to fill weakness
Edmonton won't get as much guaranteed value in return as older stars, but will be able to fill in gaps, add prospects and will be taking back higher salary then they will give. This will further complicate things for the future if done poorly. This makes more sense if Edmonton was further in the rebuild process, unfortunately they are still on the ground floor.
Edmonton's situation is so enticing, but to say they are in the drivers seat is a bit delusional because they have a lot of tough decisions to make and 29 other teams know that. No team in this age is going to deplete their roster for a piece to a giant puzzle, especially in a salary cap age.

I had to read about how all the leaf rentals had sooooo much value and how much the leafs should get by trading them ( Franson, Santo and Winnik ) how are they playing now? horrible!!! I dont think Bernier is attactive to teams, all he has proven is that he is widely inconsistant. as for your waivers comment, comon!! there is a huge diference from a waiver claim to trading players for assets, give your head a shake - Ross77
okay. I just shook my head - still not capable of thinking clearly enough to believe that all the Leaf players have no value.
and your own commentary (other than the head-shaking part) is somewhat illogical. Leafs trade pending FAs at/near the trade-deadline for quite good returns (imo). Do teams tend to overpay at the Trade Deadline... ? Now quick, give your head a good shake ... do they? yes.
and were the Leafs players - such as Franson going to be playing top-pairing minutes in Nashville... ahhhhhhh... no. So bad on Nashville for wasting assets on a guy they didn't need... that doesn't make Franson have no value.
keep shaking. |

To Toronto: Jussi Jokinen, Erik Gudbranson, a Jr/AHL prospect and 11th overall pick
To Florida: Phil Kessel and a Marlie
Reasoning: Tallon has been rebuilding Florida for 5 years now. It's time to make a move and what better than at the draft table infront of the home fans. Kessel gives them a win-now scoring winger that can play with Barkov or Bjustad.
Reasoning: The Leafs get a productive veteran/salary back in Jussi Jokinen, a young right-handed d-man that can play with Rielly and the 11th overall pick to take Pavel Zacha, Timo Meier, Nick Merkley or Thomas Chabot on the spot.
To Toronto Teddy Purcell, Justin Schultz and 16th overall pick
To Edmonton: Dion Phaneuf
Reasoning: The Oilers need a top 4 d-man that can step in and eat minutes. Dion can go home on his contract that basically takes him to retirement and be another player. Doesn't have to be the captain or the head honcho, just a solid d-man that can give the kids help from the blue line. Oilers need a defenceman and believe it or not, Dion Phaneuf is the best d-man available on the trade market this summer. Noone is gonna trade a Shea Weber or Alex Pietrangelo.
Reasoning: The Leafs are in rebuild mode and need Dion gone. This gives us 4th 1st round pick in the draft, which would be insane but also very possible because the Oilers have no use for that pick at this point. Take on Teddy Purcell's 4.5m for cap purposes, it's only a one year deal and can hang out in Toronto until the trade deadline, Justin Schultz is an RFA and was a money in the bank FA signing by the Oilers that can go back the other way to re-unite with this Wisconsin buddy Jake Gardiner. With Dion, Ference, Fayne, Nurse, Klefbom and Nikitin, putting Schultz in the deal doesn't really hurt.
To Toronto: Joey Hishon and a 3rd round pick
To Colorado: Tyler Bozak
Reasoning: The Avs have Danny Briere's 4m falling off the books. They could use a solid 3rd line centre to give them depth behind Duchene and MacKinnon. Bozak replaces Briere at the same money. Colorado is essentiallly a homecoming for Bozie as he played for University of Denver. Easy deal for Colorado to make sending potential bust prospect Hishon and a 3rd the other way.
Reasoning: The Leafs finally shed their anchor of a 1st line centre for a project player and a draft pick and are happy to move on without him.
I would like to project a Joffey Lupul trade but I honestly have no clue who would even want that guy at his cap number. Wouldn't be surprised if Lupul is back next year |

yeah i don't know if this has always been the case. Last year for instance, Minnesota won a round and Tampa Bay didn't, Minnesota still picked ahead of Tampa Bay based on their regular season point totals. |

How about JVR to his home town NJ for the 6th overall pick and a 3rd rounder. With that pick we could draft a host of good players. Pavel Zacha, Lawson Crouse, Mitch Marner (if he slips past 5th), Ivan Povorov.. NJ is a team that hasn't done particularly well with their drafting as of late and because they are a team with salary restrictions, they will be looking for an economical contract. They will also need to replace Jagar's scoring and what better way than to bring in a home town kid? |

EDM will be sooo tight against the cap....
Dion to EDM creates more cap stress.
How will they retain these players?
If Yaks finds some chemistry with McDavid, they will both be looking for higher than normal raises when their respective contracts expire.
HALL 6M, Eberle 6M, RNH - 6M, Mcdavid 10M (in 3 years), Yak (maybe $6M).
Add Dion to the mix @ 7M
Thats $41 Million invested in 6 players.
they have to ice a 23 man roster.
With the cap projected to go down, what will they do?
Who do they cut\trade\buyout? |

not sure we can pry gudbranson out of fla. I see something like this if a trade goes down:
kessel for petrovic, trochek, 2015 1st, 2016 2nd, boyes
cap flexibility and a mid pick is what I'm expecting for lupul. hemsky and a 3rd?

Salary cap is going up like 1 million this year. In 3 years it should rise. In 3 years they can trade some wingers. Keep that core strong with McDavid and Nuge up the middle. |

Purcell and Schultz' salary equalsto Dion. So they actually aren't looking bad in the short term.
The cap won't go down, it may not go up much year but it will as years go by, it will start to push towards 80 million. Yakupov has 2 years at 2.5m and McDavid and Nurse are 3 years away from their big deals.
Those first 3 out of Dion's 6 years are stress free, the 2nd 3 could be a little tight but the cap will rise and they will be able to deal with it. Hall,Eberle and RNH at 6 million is not that much at all considering what other star players are making
