Because those players show up in every draft??
Gotcha. - Stripes77
Yes, they do. And good GM's seem to find them.
2010-
Vlad Tarasenko 16th overall
Jaeden Schwartz 14th overall
I wonder if they would have rather traded those picks for a top 6 winger |

Find me those players in every draft? You picked the exception and also picked spots before the Sabres will be picking again in this coming draft
And where will the Sabres be picking 20th...and how many picks in the last 10 years in the 20 range turned into Corey Perry?
Oh and it took 6 years after Corey Perry was drafted that he turned into the Corey Perry we know today...2021... |

Murray probably disagrees. He's a scout. He spends months scouting. |

17yr old kids usually end up with different ideas of life at 21. sometimes devoting to hockey isn't one of them. |

He had 14 points in their cup run. Which was year 4.
Also, I mention Perry because Murray helped draft him. I'm not saying there will be a top 3 winger in the NHL available at 20. |

It's already 20th as Minny beat Vancouver.
Best they can get to is 19th if Detroit wins game 7. - dadeadhead
Vancouver finished higher in the standings than the Isles. Use the NHL standings. Other sites have them incorrect. |

This is a great point too. They probably should have traded him when he was just a prospect. You know, to get better faster |

Picks 18-21 in recent history(since 2005) have been very blah. |

He also only had 44 point that year.
You most have been saying that.
So lets draft a guy at 20 that COULD be a 2nd liner in 4-6 years or package that pick to get a winger that this team desperately needs now. Not doing enough to fill the holes your team has is exactly what Edmonton has done, don't repeat the history. |

I re-looked at it using
http://www.mynhldraft.com/NHL-Mock-Draft/
They are curently 19th as Calgary and Minny won.
Detroit wins they are 18th.

They also weren't drafting 2nd overall, coming from back to back last place finishes. They had a team built they had the luxury of waiting. Something this current Sabres team does not have. |

Traded for or signed via UFA their entire top 4.
Signed an aging Selanne coming off his worst season
Top line center was an undrafted UFA
They got real lucky in many ways. |

We won't be good next year. It just isn't going to happen.
There are multiple teams this season who had more points than the Sabres have had over the past 2 seasons combined.
It's not an overnight thing.
I'm fine with adding a player via trade and signing a few FA'S. But we already swung for the fences with Kane, and we don't even know if that has panned out yet - sbroads24
We didn't swing for the fences for anyone, Murray get rid of pieces he didn't want. People need to stop saying we got " shafted or we lost out" he moves players that he didn't want, bottom line. |

They drafted 9 in 2004 and 2nd in 2005.
Hmm. Risto was drafted 8 and Reinhart was drafted 2nd in back to back years.
Their top 6 defensemen during the cup run were traded for or signed via UFA. The vast majority of the team up front was traded for or undrafted UFA.
They got luckey and all the cards fell into place.
edit: they also drafted 12th, 5th, and 8th from 2000-2002. While not bottom feeding it isn't tripping the light fantastic either. |

If I am being the armchair GM for a moment, this is not the offseason to go completely green light regarding another big trade.
Would the Kane trade have happened when it did if he wasn't out for the rest of the season? I don't think it would have.
Murray struck when he did because the timing was very fortunate on his end.
This offseason, with the cap only going to say $71.5M-$72M, I would be looking to pull a trade or two like the Islanders did for Boychuck and Leddy. Teams that have cap issues can be taken advantage of, and as for big trades, I don't do it unless it's decidedly in my favor. In no way do I trade either of Pysyk or Zadorov.
I certainly like the look of the D next year if it is some combination of Green or Martin, Bogosian, Ristolainen, Zadorov, Pysyk, Gorges, Weber/McCabe. I would prefer Ruhwedel up over Weber and Gorges.
Next offseason would be the time, after seeing the development of all the young guys in the NHL and AHL, when I would decide to make a bigger trade.
The team will be picking high again next season almost assuredly. |

Which is fine. But we absolutely swung for the fences. Kane is not a sure thing. It's a gamble. I'm sure he will be very good, but we don't know how good yet |
