Which is fine. But we absolutely swung for the fences. Kane is not a sure thing. It's a gamble. I'm sure he will be very good, but we don't know how good yet - sbroads24
Any kind of good would be fine with E.Kane, having Bogo makes that trade just fine and a lot less of a gamble. |

The problem with that list is that it's short...and incredibly underwhelming, even at the top. |

I am pretty sure doing nothing but draft players would turn us into Edmonton in the East. You need to surround these young players with real NHL talent. As Goose said Kane fits that mold. Now its time to find at least one more top 6 forward. - Stripes77

Anyone interested in putting a flyer in on McQuaid?
Going back to a comment about Jones, from last night I believe. There was a stretch of about 9-10 games that he played when Quick was hurt 2 years ago. He played well, but it was probably more the system/defense in front of him to keep the game manageable for him. |

Tell me how, exactly we swung for the Fences? The trade evens out to this:
Myers, Armia for Bogozian
Stafford (UFA), Lemeuix(Wouldn't sign), 1st for Kane
I'm not gonna lie, your love-fest for Myers is getting old. Equal your "show where Kane has become a 30-goal scorer again" shtick. There is absolutely no way a 24-year old 'foremer' 30-goal scoring power-forward doesn't put up 20+ a year on this team for the next few years, if he stays healthy. This isn't Drew Stafford.
Also, when Myers plays a full season in the Peg next year we will see their fans saying the EXACT same thing about him that we did. IDC how many points per game he put up when he was traded. And honestly, Winnipeg actually played worse after they subtracted Bogo for Myers. And he didn't look good at all in the playoffs, IMO. He looked timid, as he always does. Which, despite your best efforts to argue the opposite, is INEXCUSABLE for a guy his size. He doesn't have to fight or make big hits constantly, but he is flat out timid and for being the biggest guy on the ice 99% of the time, that's a damn crying shame.
And what is with this notion of keeping a late 1st pick at the off chance a player drafted there turns out to be a top-6 winger? You have just as much of a chance of drafting that player in rounds 2-7 see: Datsyuk, Pavel, Zetterberg, Henrik. |

Of course, there's also the wild assumption that a Corey Perry drafted mid first round in 2015 even exists. |

Some people cherish the 1st rnd picks like gold. after the top 5 are gone the other 25 picks in that rnd become QVC gold. |

Or the chance that player is Dany Heatley.
And what's to say Perry isn't the player he is because of playing with Getzlaf or in the system he plays in? You put Perry on the Florida Panthers his whole career, I'd argue he never even becomes a 30-goal scorer.

Lucic, Oshie, Saad, Skinner, ROR, Eberle, Coyle, Grandlund, Simmonds, Schenn, Coutourier, Burns.
All players I would give up that pick for.
Granted you may need to add a small piece for a few of those guys. |

This was my whole point.
This isn't 2003. Sure there are gems found in later rounds but those are few and far in between. You're better off trading that pick in a package.
To not become Edmonton you need to surround these kids with the right type of players skill set, experience, etc. Those are players already playing in the NHL and have a resume. I am not talking a 37 year old Ryan Smyth either.
Not getting the right players to play with is just as bad as rushing a player (see Grigorenko) |

As we all know Tarasenko and Schwartz aren't going anywhere.
If St Louis is in blow it up mold, Backes is the one and only name I'm interested in from them.

Perry is a top tier guy wherever he plays IMO, I don't think Getzlaf makes or breaks him, he's just to good/smart of a player. |

2005-2011 the players picked from 18-21 are no where close to Perry good.
Hell Dallas thought so highly of the Perry pick they traded it for 2 seconds on draft day. No one knew Perry was gonna blow up. Higher probability of drafting a nothing over drafting a Perry. |

You can't have your cake and eat it too.
You can't expect the team to get any better if you don't do anything to help improve it.
yes, we have a lot of good quality prospects. But other than Eichel, Ristolainen, and Girgensons, none of them are what I would call high quality.
It's time to package some of them up together to get some more high quality players. You need some vets that can help with the youth. If they wait for all of these prospects to make their way through the ranks, it's going to be another 3 or 4 years of finishes probably in the 5-8 range.
You have to give to get. With the current cap situation a lot of teams have, it's very possible they could manage to get some guys from cash strapped teams because those teams don't have a choice but to make room somewhere.
We also have to be careful about the number of guys under contract. With the amount of guys we've drafted over the past few years, it's going to start getting tricky to get them all under contract in the allotted time before we lose their rights. I'd rather trade some of them for a better guy than lose them for nothing because we didn't have enough contracts to go around. - HonkFortheGoose
I'm pretty sure you left out Reinhart on accident. |

I honestly hope they keep it but only if they can get Kylington. Prior to the season he was the clear cut #4 guy. He got injured and as we all know many times an injury lingers. If you can walk out of this draft with the #2 and #4 guy prior to the season, you do it.
He's not very good in his own end but you can't tell me you wouldn't take an Erik Karlsson type guy back there. Risto, Pysyk, Zads, Kylington has the makings of a hell of a top 4. |

I have a little time, so I'll play along.
20th overall
1998 - Scott Parker. Bad
1999 - Barrett Heisten. Bad
2000 - Alexander Frolov. Froloaf
2001 - Marcel Goc. Def. not top 6
2002 - Daniel Paille. Enough said
2003 - Brent Burns. great
2004 - Travis Zajac. Average. Garbage draft.
2005 - Kenndal McArdle. Who?
2006 - David Fischer. Again. Who?
2007 - Angelo Esposito. lol
2008 - Michael Del Zotto. decent
2009 - Jacob Josefson. Bad
2010 - Beau Bennett. below avg
2011 - Connor Murphy. good
2012 - Scott Laughton. above avg
2013 - Anthony Mantha. we'll see. good prospect
2014 - Nick Schmaltz. good prospect
So let's see, besides '13 and '14, which guys would I want on the Sabres? Brent Burns, Connor Murphy and maybe a 23 year old Frolov. Laughton's not bad but I'd rather have Girgensons any day of the week. They're basically the same.
What the hell are you people getting so horny over? Chances are, 20th overall sucks.
