You have to get creative. I've mentioned several times an idea Yost first floated about offering two players from the same team simultaneously. That forces a cap strapped team to choose one and let the other walk. Toffoli and Martin Jones was the example given.

First, u have to get both guys to sign, which is a big step that seems to be taken for granted when it comes to RFAs
Second, u have to sign them to amounts when the draft pick compassion doesn't overlap, which can be done, but can be difficult
In the situation u describe,
Toffoli gets matched no doubt about it
Do we even want Jones? He hasn't played nearly enough for me to be convinced we should give him a multiple year deal that's big enough they wouldn't match.
If that is the case though, and we do want Jones, offering Toffoli won't affect LAs thinking when it comes to him. All we have to do is offer enough $$$
That's a mistake IMO
