The Flyers need a number one defenseman. They need another top six playmaker. They need more skill overall in the system.

They can draft a guy like Barzal and have the ability to trade another center for help on the wings. They can draft Provorov and use one of the other young defenseman to fill another hole, since Provorov rates higher than most of them.

If they select Crouse they're still getting a good player, but he might not top out as high as some of the others that could be available. I'd rather get the guy who turns out to be the best player.

- Jsaquella

How can a player selected within the top 10 in a deep draft, who fills a need and NHL ready right now not be skilled enough?

We have two picks in a deep draft. Crazier things have happened, like Simon Gagne and Claude Giroux being selected at 22 overall and Mike Richards at 24th overall. Even crazier when your PK Subban being selected at 43 in the second round or Shea Weber at 49 in the second round.

If you're relying on an 18-yo (even McDavid) to be a turnkey fit in a position of immediate need and counting on them to help propel your team toward contention, you're probably going to be extremely disappointed.
- Tomahawk

Where and when did I say this? I say Crouse could be on the roster right away, on a position of need and this somehow translatesto your ears that I'm expecting to contend next season because of it? I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around this.

I think that if you have that, you need a buffer, like Hitchcock and Primeau or Keenan and Poulin

I can handle anything except Bylsma or Coach Tortellini. I will freak out if either of them becomes the next coach for the Orange and Black.

If we're talking about Lawson Crouse, he's probably ready to step in on a third line. Skilled or not, to expect him to step in and be an immediate answer at the top line LW spot is expecting way too much. Third line LW is NOT a need. The Flyers have seven guys who can play that role

I'm more worried about Crouse never being more than a 2nd line winger, who chips in 25 goals and plays a solid two way game, while other teams took Provorov and watched him become a number one defenseman, or took Barzal and watched him become a number one center.

Given that there's about 8 good wingers rated between 20-30 that have similar potential to Crouse-without the safety net of NHL readiness-I'd rather grab a guy who will not only play well, but will help to make others on his team better.

If the Flyers do take Crouse, they'll be getting a very good player. But they could be bypassing guys who turn out to be much better players. Right now, they need to grab the guys who will turn out to be much better players, and stockpile them.

That's my preference, because I prefer having skill over filling needs, because if they need wingers, they are a lot easier to trade for than centers or defensemen

I stopped reading when you assumed I expected him to step into the top line spot. I never said that. I'm aware that there is a learning curve for every young player that enters the league no matter when they do so.

Jake Voracek plays Right Wing. Wayne Simmonds plays Right Wing. Suddenly everyone wants Brayden Schenn at Right Wing, leaving whatever is left over to play on the left. Personally I'd shift Matt Read to Right Wing on the third line and leave Schenn on the Left but this is neither here nor there. Crouse is a natural Left Winger. Simple. We don't need Lawson Crouse to instantly step on to the top line. According to everyone here Michael Raffl is already the perfect fit to play with Giroux and Voracek.

Matt Read has had two 20 goal seasons playing primarily LW, and Raffl, as you said can play with Giroux and Voracek. Then there Cousins, Laughton and Bellemare who can possibly play 3rd line LW. Umberger will probably be back and if he can play closer to his career norms, he can play 3rd line LW.

They also will soon have 9 defensemen on one way deals, when Del Zotto gets re-signed. They can probably trade one of them for a LW, if need be.

Ignore positions for a minute. Would you bypass Connor McDavid for Crouse, because one is a center and one is a LW? How about Ryan Strome? That's why my preference is to draft guys who have the potential to be better players, rather than worry about position in this draft.

I'm not against drafting for long term success by any stretch of the imagination but if Lawson Crouse fills a need of position and his earlier experiences in the NHL transforms him into a Max Pacioretty type in 3 years from now, I wanna do that! Home grown.

Honestly if he had a Pacioretty type ceiling, I'd jump at him as well. But that's not a sure thing. He might end up being a bigger, meaner Matt Read. That's not a bad thing, but I'm not crazy about passing up a potential number one defenseman or potential number one center for a bigger, meaner Matt Read.
