It's possible they may not want him back. Old guard is moving on and the young guys may need a fresh face. Why pay Babcock 5 or 6 mil a year when for a fraction of that you can promote Blashill and have it wind up being better for you long term. |

I don't think they would have offered him that much if that was the case. I think it's simply a matter of the fact that they have a price that they are willing to pay and they came forward with it. |

true that...it really seems like they'll be parting ways |

It makes him look like the bad guy, which is what you want.
If they lowball the offer it comes off as a sign of disrespect. If they offer him a contract that makes him the highest paid coach in the nhl (yet probably not the highest offer he gets) and he still walks, you can play the "hey we tried our best" card.

Good article. I think its very good that babs will get the chance to see eichel play in person. What coach wouldnt want to be working with eichel? |

Pach - been a while since I expressed how impressed I am with every one of these blogs. Thanks again for the work.
Babcock wold be very interesting. I think he becomes the draw for the free agent signings that make TMGM's "two draft turnaround" a possibility.
The teardown acquires the picks, and the last two drafts stocks the shelves with youngins.
The picks and prospects make the trades possible - like Kane and Bogo.
Now we need to be able to acheive success in the Free Agent Market: we have the facilities, we have the pocketbook, we just need the system and the credibility in the league to draw the talent.
Ooh Ah - Sabres on a Warpath! |

I dont understand the 3rd round pick to detroit thing.is that because he would be going to another team while still technically under contract? If thats the case, why not just wait until his contract expires to ink him? I assume its a good faith thing for allowing a team to speak to him now? |

That would be my assumption. However I would rather give up the pick if it means knowing who my coach is BEFORE the draft. I think that is pretty important. |

We obviously have picks at our disposal. Just thought it was kind of demending for a team that doesnt have a lot of leverage if he doesnt want to stay with them... |

It's like trading the UFA rights to a team like what happened with Ehrhoff (twice) |

-Trade Larrsson, Grigorenko, & the NYI first rd pick to Colorado; for Ryan O'Riley,
-Sign UFA Justin Williams @ 3 yrs/$5 mill per yr,
And Babcock might actually consider the idea! |
