Why? No idea, it makes no sense to me why they want him gone and have stated they'll eat 50%. But, I think you can't be wrong taking him in for 3.5 mil. - Guile
He would still be grossly overpaid if he produced like he did last year. I think he'll improve on those numbers, but he is 31 and his contract lasts until 2018. It could still end up badly for Pittsburgh.

He's not a top 6 on a full time basis, but more spot duty when someone is injured.

Giving Kapanen fourth line minutes does nothing for his development.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? It helped Drouin in Tampa... |

He sure is better than scott young! |

Well... Semin has really only has 1 "bad" season there. His first season was good, a point per game.
Second seasons dropped to about .66 a game. This 3rd one, dreadful, at .33. - Guile

Would you rather see him play 4th line minutes or zero? You know how pens mgmt is about playing veteran players over young prospects. He & Sundvist could potentially be 2/3 of the future 3rd line. |

Why would they want a Dman that has had the same shoulder surgically repaired 2x in the same year for a former 1st pick that just signed a cap friendly contract? I think they would want more. - sammy87
Edmonton is in need of D and Maatta has proven already at a young age to be a top 4 defenseman. And Maatta's $900k is pretty cap friendly as well. Also Yakapov's GPG has gone down the last 2 seasons. The question should be, why would Pitt make that deal ? |
|

Ugh, thats ugly. I can see Geno and Semin going invisible for long stretches. Im not banking on Dupes coming back either and why do you have Kap on the 4th line? He will last about 2 weeks there before he becomes BB 2.0. - sammy87
last report had dupes starting to get ready to come back late playoffs. |

A guy who would be an under the radar signing that would help the bottom 6 is Jack Skille. He isn't going to blow anybody away, but he is a speedy grinder who is physical. Would probably only be 1M or below. |

Or maybe he gets top 2 line minutes in WBS where he can hone his skill versus lesser talent. |

Any list with Carter, Booth, Pacorietty, Nash and Matt Belesky in it as comparables has flaws. |

I agree. I hope we sign him, he gave us all kinds of problems in that playoff series. He's definitely a solid player. |

I hope we don't. He doesn't produce offensively and isn't good defensively. Eaves is a UFA that would be useful on the 4th line.

If he improves back to the prior year at .66 a game, thats about a 55 point season for 3.5 mil. With a ceiling that I think most of us will agree is higher than that .66 mark, I think it'd be foolish to not see what Carolina is asking. |

The term on Semin deal is why a deal not happening. I mean even if they retain 50% your still talking about 10.5 million worth of risks.
I'd consider 50% retained and they take Scuderi though.
The only way I see us pulling off a decent offseason is signing Soderberg. Adds some grit to 3rd line. If you pair him with some quality forwards we could have a pretty solid third line. That frees up Sutter to be dealt or moved into some kind of role with Malkin. Sutter does have some scoring touch.
Then we could work with
Peron - Crosby - Hornqvist
Sutter/assets acquired for Sutter - Malkin - Bennet/Kap
Kunitz - Soderberg - Dupuis
Sundqvists/Comeau/maybe winnik 4th line
First line is very good. Second line has potential - Malkin flanked with guys with 20+ goal potential. If Kunitz/Dupuis are healthy that would be a very good 3rd line. It could really drive possession and you have 3 guys that can all hit 10-25 goals/year. 2 |

Why on earth would Pittsburgh even remotely consider trading Maatta for a moody Russian that really hasn't lived up to his billing?

Everyone wants to trade Kuni, Scuds, Sutter for whatever picks they can get. But that really doesn't do this team any good. Those picks, IF they turn out won't contribute until 71 and 87 are 33 and 32 years old.
Sutter paired with Harrington or Dumo might bring something back that can help now. - sammy87
This is 100% accurate |

Fisher isn't leaving Nashville.
PHX has probably the worst centers in the league. If they can send Sutter + BB/D Prospect for Boedker that would be huge. - sammy87
PHX doesn't need BB and I'm not sure they need D either. This makes no sense for Phoenix |
