I agree. I hope it blows up in their faces. I don't see where a coach gets off having a larger or just as much say in what the roster looks like. He's come across as a huge megalomaniac. FFS, the guy inherited a fantastic team in its prime, is 1 for 3 (I'd take those odds but still, he's no Scotty Bowman) in the stanley cup finals, and was mediocre almost every other year he was in the playoffs.
Ups our rivalry, though for the next 8 years. - DynamicThreads
Well, the last time the Leafs iced a consistently good team, the GM and the Coach were the same person. |

What's the tax rate in NY? ~9%?
The combined provincial/federal income tax here will nail him for just under 50%.
Think its all about the money? - Feeling Glucky?
Pretty sure in the states....especially NY or California, you're also paying close to 50% tax between federal and state.....especially at that level of income.
I have no idea what happened, but 6.5 million is stiff. Opinions on the man and his team aside. Just like players, there's always a new "great coach" in the weeds waiting for his shot. Whatever happens in buffalo, I just want to see it all Gel together. Solid coach, good locker room, good chemistry on the ice. I don't really care what the guy's name is. |

He still raises the bar for coaches salaries, like he wanted, significantly. It was about numbers, not actual money collected. Although, I do see your point, obviously. |

We need to make sure our congressman's kids have fat trust funds. Otherwise, they cant kill people in drunk driving accidents and pay off mourning families....

Leafs were the first team to (jokingly) give the C to a goalie, might as well set history again! |

This came up in here about a week ago too. The amount these guys pay in taxes isn't as cut and dry as to what city the team they're working for is located in. So let's take the tax portion out of it.

It is for the players. Don't see why it'd be different for the managers.
Though it'd explains why some of the Leaf front office still lives outside of Canada. |

Even if you base it off of the same table as you would for a player, there's not a huge difference between Buffalo and Toronto.

So maybe money has nothing to do with it but the highest paid coach now makes 6.25 million a year while the second highest paid coach makes 2.75.
Its a little about the money and he just finger-banged the coaching market in the ass. |

Still a difference of $500,000
I had no idea taxes in the States where that high.
I've been told many times how much better it is down there |

Still a considerable difference. - Feeling Glucky?
Between federal and state, he would have paid roughly 48%. Bit over 39 federal and almost 9 state. |

The taxes argument is overplayed. An NHL player's or coach's salary is more than enough to live luxuriously any place in North America, no matter how high or low the cost of living is in a given area. That's not to say that a prospective player or coach wouldn't weigh it as part of his pros and cons, but it's not going to make or break his decision. |

I was using it to say that given the reports that Buffalo and Toronto offered the same financial package, Babcock actually took less to come to Toronto, and thus it wasn't purely a money decision.
It's still true, but by a much smaller margin than I thought. |
