I doubt Babcock took the job to watch all his best players get traded and have nothing to work with.
New rules still give the lowest standing team the best odds at the best players.
The team might be young but they don't have enough high quality young players to make it worth while.
Hiring Babcock has come 5 years too early. - JohnFergusonJr
As far as we know, the Shanaplan is a long-term plan.
Babcock was hired for 8 years.
Admittedly, we have no idea what the Shanaplan is or what was discussed prior to Babcock being hired, but I'd be willing to bet a beer or two that Babcock was not brought in here for a quick fix.
And here's the funny thing: there are no quick fixes anymore. The only option is to trade away your 1st round draft picks for talent, and the Leafs simply don't have the stomach to do that. Not after Burkie.
Sit back and get comfortable. Shanny is playing the long game here. |

Babcock is hardwired to win at all times and at all costs. The firesale and the tanking require to give him the core he needs to become a winner isn't going to happen because it means losing, something Babcock won't do.
I hope they blow the team up and have a firesale but I see the odds of that drastically drop now. - JohnFergusonJr
Somehow I don't see Kessel, Bozak and Phaneuf as Babcock type players.
I think there will still be a fire sale.
The question is what can he do for Rielly, Bernier, Nylander (if he's there next year) etc. |

I respect JFJ for at least keeping calm...he and i had our battles about eichel, and how i'd give a ton plus our 4th for him ( i think he proved at the world's he's legit). But through it all he didn't name call or do stupid stuff like add .
still...he should be happy today |

he's won a cup...olympics, CIAU, etc. he knows how to run a good franchise (Detroit) and how to poope all over one (Toronto). He's a patient man and will want it built properly. $6.25 million a year has a calming effect on one's patience, weird but true - clark_griswold
Part of building it properly means getting rid of all the veterans and hitting rock bottom for a few more years. The odds of that happening now are drastically lower now. |

Plus, what would he have gotten in Buffalo? What would he have gotten even in SJ, plenty of underachievers there also... He won't expect to be in the playoffs until they are able to make the playoffs... lol... |

Wasn't Phaneuf invited to team Canada orientation camp?
Phaneuf may be more of a Babcock type player than you believe. |

There's a real cognitive dissonance going on with those who say Babcock's hiring will derail the rebuild.

I doubt he has ultimate control over trades.
Really really really doubt it. He'll be part of the committee.
Notice they didn't name him GM, either. That seat's still open.
Might wind up having too many cooks in the kitchen again. - Feeling Glucky?

Dion yes....phil no chance. i think dion had more suitors than phil because he's not a bad teammate, just not a leader. can't ever say he won't do anything to win though. Nonis said he had more offers for 3 than 81...not a better return, but more suitors |

And leave it to UG to have a problem with it. |

So even though they suck and will not finish well with him coaching, you wouldn't want him to start coaching while they suck and teach them the right way?... Babcock will only prevent the team from sucking when it doesn't suck anymore, and then they will make the playoffs.... |
