So when you do hire a new coach, will your owner and GM state publicly how disappointed they are that they didn't get Babcock?
- MBFlyerfan

Possibly, but like at the draft lottery, he will also say how good both options are and how he is excited to be able to get either of them.

Funny how people only take out one part of a statement to fit their narrative.

Richardson, Deboer and Boucher? That is embarrassing.

Luke Richardson hasn't done anything more than Chadd Cassidy did in Rochester.

Epic fail by my Sabres...such a disappointing day, they're screwed.

- DJshnooks

A guy decided on his future, the Sabres tried and were in the running... that's more than we can say about anything in the past what 10-15 years...if ever. He chose to coach a great market and get paid a poop ton for it... Sabres didn't "fail".. Babcock did his job and did his family right

What about Julien if the Bruins let him go? Although his strength probably isnt young players.... Maybe DeBoer?

Elliotte Friedman confirms that the Leafs have signed off on giving Babcock player personnel decision making power. In other words, Babcock now has the juice to back door his GM whenever he wants to.

I would rather have Julien. Do not want any part of DeBoer at all.

I am not a Sabres fan, but any stretch. But even without Babcock, the Sabres will be a better team over the next 5 years than the Leafs.

Enjoy Babcock, but until they find some way to rip apart the Leafs - getting some other team to take on their bloated contracts (and having to throw something into the mix to make that happen - the Leafs are just gonna be a crap team.

Maybe the Leafs can celebrate by making the Playoffs in 2017... 100 years of existence and 50 years of futility.

It takes a brave, confident man to walk away from the worst team in the league?

That is some delusional thinking there.

Lol " I applaud Tim Murray for sticking to his guns and no giving total personnel permission and control to Babcock. Looks like that was the deal breaker in Buffalo."

And the praise machine starts by garth for not getting Babcock. I can hear it next, he would've been bad for the culture of the kids

The Sabres will have a better record next season than the Maple Leafs hands down. We're on the upswing now. Toronto is just starting their rebuild. What GM really wants to deal with them???

Could have said the same.about coaches, yet they got one of best in the game. In fact, two of the worst teams in the game were in the running for him. Throw enough money at a good coach and he'll come. Rebuilding is a tricky thing, looking at the Oilers. You can rebuild, get good young players, and still be a bad team. Alot more to it than collecting picks and youth. Gotta develop properly too. As of now, nobody knows who will be better or worse, especially with a whole summer of roster shuffling still to come. Expect both to be bad for at least another year.

As rotten as the Leafs might be, they do have some actual bona fide NHL talent. Kessel, JvR, Kadri, Lupul, Bozak, Phaneuf, Rielly, Gardiner and Bernier have actually played and been quite effective in the NHL in the not too distant past. The Sabres have about 5-6 players that are legit NHLers at this point and only 2 or 3 of them have the kind of upside that all 9 of those Leafs have.

I'm reporting you sir. We can't have logic around here.

On a side note, aside from the cash, I wonder why he chose Toronto over Buffalo? If it really was control, I'm actually pretty glad about that. I remember listening to the WGR app on my way home last night and was a little worried about how that would work.

Who knows? Everyone is right though, if both these teams can get good at the same time, wow, what this will do for the rivalry.

I'll take that action. I win you send me a youth large sabres T-shirt of my choice for my son and if you win I'll send you a Islander t-shirt of any choice for you or your kid if you have one. Deal? I'm a man of my word.

I don't think you realize just how bad the Sabres' roster actually is at this point. Also, the Leafs have some actual NHL players.

Umm, I think I know what the Sabres have, and I'm not going out on a limb with my previous statement.

Toronto may have "some actual NHL players" as you put it. However they're far, far from being a competitive team...

My question is, what level of "input"? I mean, let's face it both Murray and Babcock have VERY big ego's, maybe Babcock's is a little more justified , but still...

How would that have worked? Perhaps Shanny will relent more because of their prior relationship?

I think both will be good, but together I was worried about coexistence.

Don't get me wrong, I would have loved to see how it played out, but can't now.
