The probability of the 3rd rounder panning out isn't in our favor either, so really it's not like it would be a huge loss if he didn't end up working out. It's low risk, but could be high reward.

I have to throw this out there to all the Buffalo fans, and those who are saying that Babcock played them.

From all indications, the Buffalo Sabres and the Toronto Maple Leafs offered Babcock the same money. Babcock chose Toronto over Buffalo even though Toronto is probably in a much worse situation right now in terms of a rebuild. Babcock admitted that when he first went into the interview with the Leafs he had absolutely no intention on signing there and that he was doing it as a service. However, after hearing the vision and the plan for this team from Shanahan, he left with intrigue. After that, Shanahan was relentless in driving that message into Babcocks head. He flew to Prague, just to talk to him. If they ran into each other over there, he would bring it up. Hell, they even went out for beers and discussed it further. After coming back from Prague, Babcock said that the thought of coaching the Maple Leafs consumed him.

If we're going to believe what both Murray and Babcock said (and I have no problem doing that), the bottom line is this: Toronto had the upper hand, and they used it to their advantage in landing Mike Babcock.

The money was the same. When it comes to an upgrade in quality of life, Buffalo and Detroit are on equal footing at best. There are very few people, if any, that would leave Detroit just to move to Buffalo unless it was completely necessary, and there are very few people, if any, that would leave Buffalo to fulfill a lifelong dream of moving to Detroit. Toronto, on the other hand, as much as we hate the "city bashing", is an upgrade to most people, compared to both Buffalo and Detroit. Yes, Buffalo is experiencing a "resurgence". The things going on at Canalside are great, but those are attractions geared toward getting the already current natives to spend more time in the city, or to get suburbanites to come to the city more often, and it's working beautifully. These aren't attractions that will get a ton of people from out of town. Nobody's going to move to Buffalo "because Canalside". The truth is that many cities are doing really cool things with their waterfront. Buffalo is finally catching up.

However, it is all different for people.
It is a personal choice.
If Babcock is Canadian (I am not sure), then that might have helped him decide.
Some people might like the small city atmosphere, to raise their family, so Buffalo would be an alright choice.

He is Canadian. The only thing that would have attracted him (and give him ability to sell his family on the idea) to Buffalo is the organization itself.

It's obvious he wanted to coach in Canada and his wife would have rather lived in Toronto.

Also- (and this is in no way a plug for Burmistrov)- isnt it widely accepted that scoring in the KHL is tough to come by. Lots of bogged down hockey is my understanding. Dont recall anyone with eye popping stats off the top of my head

After Winter and Murray came to terms on a two-year contract at $1.65 million a season, Lowe picked up the phone and informed Winter there was a condition to completing the trade -- that Comrie make a payment of $2.5 million to the Oilers to "top up" the transaction.

The deal came undone, Perry stayed in Anaheim and later in December Lowe dealt Comrie to the Philadelphia Flyers for Jeff Woywitka and draft picks that turned into Rob Schremp and Danny Syvret.

If Lowe only knew then what we all know now.
