Pretty much all legit starters get 5+ these days once they've had a couple of seasons of being a workhorse and are in their UFA years.

He's big but doesn't like playing defense and isn't exactly a mean player. Also struggles when pivoting, he's only a decent skater in straight lines. He's a weird player because he has good passing and shooting skills, but his weaknesses are so bad that you can't really trust him either.

And if you actually want a legit top 4 young d-man who's young, you better be prepared for teams to ask for Virtanen+ or McCann+ . That's the price these days.

That's why you have to draft and develop some. That's how contenders are built these days, it makes more sense to go out and make a big splash when you already have a team on the rise, not when you're still trying to build a pool of solid young talent.

No point in having Seabrook for the last 3-4 years of his prime when this team won't be contending. Especially since it's going to cost a top 4 d-man, plus a top prospect.

Yipes...gotta have some level of veteran mentorship even with a 'retool on the fly' and Edler,Hammer and Bieksa ain't gonna cut it for the next 3-4 years.

Hamhuis is fine as a mentor, the guy is well respected, a true pro and can still play a high level. I'm not paying a top prospect++ for a mentor...because that mentor won't have much talent to teach after you get him. That defeats the whole purpose.

Plus the truly good players don't need to learn from an elite player to reach their potential, they just need good veteran pros around. Guys who work hard on and off the ice and set a good example that way. You don't need all-star vets.
