Pretty much. What do you do when you're in cap trouble? Get rid of the cheap, young guys? No, you get rid of the old dead weight if you can find a dance partner.
Then you pay the cheap young guys.
I mentioned this ages ago, but I think the modern GM is going to have to know when to jettison players at the right time, before they become Brad Richards. Even if they have a good year or two left in them. In the cap era, you cant get stuck with 4 more years of a huge contract on a guy playing in the minors - seedy
It's not that easy, the Hawks are a team with 2 giant contracts, and 4 or 5 guys making 5 plus mil.
It honestly might be better for them to trade Saad and get some assets back rather than just moving Sharp for a minimal return
After being returned to the WHL after nine NHL games with the Buffalo Sabres, Sam Reinhart continued the strong, consistent performance he has put on display throughout his junior hockey career.
Reinhart has excellent vision on the ice, which makes him dangerous as a mover of the puck. There is seldom any hint of panic in his play, testimony to his confidence and maturity. For an offensively gifted player often targeted by opponents, he has tremendous discipline.
Selected by the Sabres in the first round, second overall, at the 2014 NHL Draft, Reinhart scored 19 goals and added 46 assists in 47 games this season. He was also a member of Team Canada, the gold medalists at the 2015 World Junior Championship. While with Kootenay for parts of five seasons, the Reinhart-led Ice never missed qualifying for the WHL playoffs. He finished up the current season with Rochester in the AHL."

If they could move Hossa or Bickell, that would let them breathe - homiedclown
They can, and they will before they let Saad go. The only way you actually succeed in poaching Saad from them is by offering him a salary in the "four firsts" range. And at that point, it's not worth it. You have to severely overpay a guy like that in order to succeed in getting the original team to walk away.
Offering Saad even 6 years at $36 million accomplishes nothing more than Buffalo doing the Chicago's negotiating work for them, even though I think that's a little too high for him.
Nobody explicitly called him a bust, just that he may need more time in the AHL. Nobody's questioning the talent or the smarts but there are areas of his game he could work on. There's no need to rush him, especially since the odds of Bylsma putting him on the top line are slim to none.

I think a bridge deal at 4.5 per would work for both sides
If I am the hawks, I trade Crawford if I have to , in order to make that work

Disagree, saying the kid can't put up second line numbers is a slap, which most posters said
Bylsma, talking about the future mentioned Reinhart before Eichel, not sure how many caught that near the end of the presser

That question needs to be revisited after pre-season. By then the organization will have a better understanding of where his game is at and if he needs any more time in the minors.
And i wouldn't put too much stock into the mention, especially since Eichel isn't technically a sabre yet (though i was surprised at how often they dropped the name).

If Pastrnak can put up points at a 50 point pace, no reason to think reinhart is not capable of doing so, if in the right situation
I'll leave it at that
I have said for months, wait til August to forecast the sabres for next season, let's not be so quick to dismiss reinhart because we will have a new toy in a few weeks
This would have to be a hell of a plus. I imagine they'd want LA's first but i can't see them moving it since they'll be short one next year. - Sabresfan-365

Pastrnak got to play with Lucic and Krejci, if Reinhart can be paired with a vet then it's more likely but it's a tall order to stick two rookie teenagers on a line and expect them to put up numbers right away.
Mackinnon put up 38 pts in 64 games playing with guys like Landeskog and O'Reilly.

I'm starting to think the cap hit is the most important item on a GM's mind. GM's with a good owner will be willing to give a guy a big contract to win a cup and then either trade him away or buy him out before he starts to decline. Kind of a "retirement plan" for the player. Murray is good at acquiring assets. I have a feeling he's going to have a few key players and will be constantly moving the tertiary players/bringing up new guys.

I like this !
Solid GM's HAVE to be thinking 4-5 years down the road.
GMTM has to hit in the 2nd-4th round and stock the cupboards each year with these said 'tertiary' players. It's all about quality depth.

Trade Reinhart to Coyotes - he can play with his Canadian Jr line mates (Domi & Duclair). We grab Noah Hanifin, opens up the Zadorov trade!
