Because you fired the employee.
You still have to pay said employee.
Once hired by another you no longer need to pay said terminated employee.
No compensation should be required.
Babcock was still under contract. Totally different scenario. - dadeadhead
As far as morality goes I'd say you are right but we are talking about two teams that are in competition. It's within the contract. I think maybe you guys should go for Capuano. It won't cost you anything. |

Why didn't they demand compensation for Shero? Isn't it the same thing? Weren't they still paying him as well? If I were Buffalo, that would be my argument to the league. If we have to give up something for Bylsma, then NJ should have to give up something for Shero. - HonkFortheGoose
Oh I agree completely. I hope Murray fights for that 81st OA. |

I need the rule defined - Michael Pachla
Per a Yahoo story:
"Last year, the NHL approved a rule requiring a team to provide a draft pick as compensation should it hire another team's coach, general manager or president of hockey operations who is still under contract. The cost is a third-rounder if the hiring takes place during the offseason, or a second-rounder if it happens during the season."
No mention of it being optional though |

because bylsma's no longer employed by the Pittsburgh organization and the fact that it isn't buffalo's problem that the pens were desperate for draft picks...
screw them...they'll take a 2017 seventh rounder and like it - Michael Pachla
I could be wrong but I think it has to be a 3rd within two yrs of hire? |

If a team has the option to do so why wouldn't they get that draft pick? Especially when it's coming from a team they're competing with in the same conference. It doesn't matter whether it's not Buffalo's problem or not those are the rules and the Pens are within the rules doing so. They'd be stupid not too.

If PIT doesn't demand comp for Bylsma, how long before PIT gets roasted in its market for not collecting compensation that is available.

So then Pitt gets a 3rd rounder from Jersey for Shero at some point, if I'm reading this correctly. Have they called Shero and Lou to let them know they'll be taking that compensation? |

I don't use twitter. At some point, I need to limit my social media usage, and since I use FB to keep in contact with family, that's the platform I currently use. |

Somebody on your thread the other day said that Pitts wouldn't demand a pick. I disagreed saying they were desperate for draft picks. I think pretty much any team would demand compensation if they were in their shoes. Why wouldn't they? - Cptmjl
Not saying they wouldn't. Of course they would. The problem is with the rule itself. It is dumb.
The reason they wouldn't is pretty clear though. To get 2 million dollars off the books (or whatever his salary was).
Granted some teams would be happy just to get the ex-employee off the payroll. Then again, the owners all live in a different world than we do and paying someone $2 million a year to sit on a couch doesn't seem to be a problem.
Others apparently feel it is much more important to get that 3rd round pick that will turn into a prospect that has a 22% chance of skating in an actual NHL game let alone making a contribution.
Like I said, pro sports is a whole different business model than any of us can fathom. If I had a chance to clear 2 million dollars off the books and didn't do so for a 22% of getting something that 5+ years down the road might make a contribution to my company and I didn't take it, I would be out of a job really quick. |

It must be 3, because that's what was being said about Babcock. A 3rd rounder sometime in the next 3 years. |

I believe I read (red/reid) that they waved the compensation for Shero.
So it must be optional to some extent. |

Understandable. I mean I guess you have a few guys like me to throw up breaking news and this and that from twitter.. but I find it to be a great source of sports news, something FB can't provide. As far as communicating with friends and family, I don't think I've ever done that on twitter. |

Gonna dredge up an awful post I saw the other day and suggest we throw 6 million at Tarasenko and then expect the Blues not to match it because their priorities lie with Oshie. - TheSabresTaco
You offer sheet Toffoli and Martin Jones at the same time for the same money, that way you only have one penalty. They either match on one and we get the other, or they sign Justin Williams and we get both. Im all about this plan |
