A lot of those players are fairly young, and making the jump to the NHL is about a lot of things, not just ability. The NHL is a salary cap environment now. That's a factor. Developing into an NHL player is a process. Manning looks like he has some NHL potential, as does Cousins. Not sure how Murray can just be removed as a factor in the improvement of those players. Just because a player like Manning is given more offensive opportunity, due to an injury to another player, doesn't mean he's going to do well with that opportunity.
The amount of players that make the jump to the NHL from the AHL, is a very small percentage. - MJL
I am not saying that Murray had no influence. I am saying that, in my opinion, Murray's time coaching the Phantoms has not illustrated that he is currently a superior teacher for the developing players. Heck, I'm sure that Kjell's brief time as head coach had some positive nudge.
If you want to switch the topic to development, I would challenge you to name any players who have come through the Phantoms in the past three years who you can say contributed to the Flyers. The lockout year excluded. Conversely, look at the players who came up through Jon Cooper in Norfolk and Syracuse. I will save you the trouble. many of them are playing tonight and tomorrow in Game 7's. Yes, scouting and drafting prowess is a big factor. However, if Murray's three year accomplishment list is a third pairing defenseman and a "maybe" Cousins, my point is at the very least defendable. |

You can challenge me all you want, there has to be NHL potential talent. He isn't a deity who is going to raise someone from the dead!
You seem like a knowledgeable fellow, I'm sure I don't have to point out the talent discrepancy between those TB players, and the players that Murray has had to work with recently. This is exactly what I'm talking about. Murray hasn't been able to polish a turd into gold, so therefore he's not a good developmental coach.

Anyone done a Tough Mudder?
For some reason I agreed to do one in the Fall and that seems logical for a round UC Engineer like me. |
