That's how I see it. So if the Flyers did offer him $3.375 it would be a 1st and 3rd if another team wanted to match. Something I don't see happening. - Streit2ThePoint
Wait...what???? The Flyers offer to him has nothing to do with another team matching. It's what the other team offers and the Flyers matching. |

No, but I'd put money on Read playing more to the tune of his first 3 seasons as opposed to last. I'd hope the Schenn/Vinny on the top line experiment is over. I think we get at least 4th line NHL quality play from Umberger. Berube is no longer the coach.
That could be enough of a difference for a W.C. spot. - jmatchett383
Maybe, but without adding at least one legit top pair dman, it will be really tough.

The qualifier just ensures the Flyers keep his rights. For an offer sheet, another team needs to make the offer, and have Del Zotto sign it. Once that happens, the Flyers get a week to match or they get the compensation for whatever the sheet was worth. - Jsaquella
Right. My point was that the Flyers don't set the O.S. price, the team attempting to require him does. Theoretically, the Flyers could offer him $5M and if he rejects it, and team could offer him $3M and he's accept. So I don't see how the Flyers can set his market price at $3.75M. |

The Flyers offer to MDZ has nothing to do with offer sheet compensation as they already hold his rights. The compensation would be determined by the amount of the offer sheet submitted by another team (assuming he signs it).
Now, if the Flyers offer him $3.375 and he declines it, it's unlikely he's accept less from another team. But, say he didn't like it here, he could sign for less than the Flyers offer him. |

That could happen, but if the Flyers offer him $5mm and he says no, an accepts $3mm form another team, the Flyers can just match it and get him for $3mm.
The Flyers have to tender the QO, and at that point they retain his rights-as well as the right to match any offer sheet he signs. They can use arbitration or work out a deal on their own. The only time another team gets involved, really, is if they come in and offer a sheet that Del Zotto agrees to, and signs, which then gives the Flyers the power to match and retain him, or the get the CBA designated compensation. |

Right. But my point was that the Flyers cannot set his offer sheet market. I understand how the offer sheet works, but it seemed like people were saying that they could set his market value of an offer sheet. |

I was getting to something like if the Flyers offered him $3.375, a team that would really want him would likely offer a little more, no? And if the Flyers don't match that offer (say $3.6 or what have you) they get a 1st and 3rd pick.

True, the offer sheet value is determined by another team. But, using the example, if the Flyers offered $X & it being turned down, the chances of another team going below that and getting a signature is really nil.
Now, a UFA might take less from another team, because there's no ability to match. But a RFA is limited, because the old team can match-which is why most offer sheets involve a degree of overpayment or at the least asinine front loading |

They kind of can. You have to figure if there's going to be an offer sheet from another team at all it's going to have to exceed the Flyers qualifying offer since there's no reason to make it if the Flyers are ready to match. What's the point?
If the Flyers think he's worth just south of 4 and MDZ thinks he's a 5 mil player he could forego the qualifying offer and the Flyers, in effect, have set the minimum of any offer sheet at 4 mil or above. The lower/higher the Flyers qualifying offer (minimum 10% raise) adjusts the reality of the dollars needed to get MDZ to sign an offer sheet. |

Well if the Flyers offer him a contract at 3.75M, why would he take less money on an OS from another team. The only possibility I could see if term was a factor. As an example, the Flyers offer him a two year deal at 3.75M per, but a team makes him an offer of 5 years at 3M per. So in a sense, a contract offer from the Flyers could set his market price. |

The bottom line is that the Flyers really are in the drivers seat with Del Zotto. They really could just qualify him at 10% and dare other teams to Offer Sheet him. If a team does, The Flyers can determine how high they want to go, and if not, take the compensation. |

Yep, a potential offer sheet is the only real leverage Del Zotto has. The Flyers shouldn't worry about it. |

The 10% would be 1.43 million for one year.
I say offer him 2.5 per for 2 years, then wait to see where the offer sheets come in. Then go as high as 3.5 to match depending on the term. If it goes higher, get your first and third and move on.
