You can get very good players everywhere in the draft, regardless of position, as long as you scout and develop effectively. - lumlums
We can agree as Leaf fans that no matter who they pick, they need home runs on these two picks. |

Thanks, buddy.
I think this is indicative of what I do around here.
I'm a calming veteran presence. I'm mentoring the younger posters.
Mike's blog is currently going a complete rebuild. We are casting off older posters like Dozzer and Tony Fernandez who are no longer producing.
But we don't want to be like an Edmonton blog, where the young kids come in and just start posting willy-nilly, without any kind of structure. Let's be honest: those kids are never going to fulfill their promise.
We need an older guy like me to show the young kids the way. To guide them to the next level of their Hockeybuzz careers.
Sure, some negative Nellies may be upset by my $7 million a year contract, but they always miss the point: it's not just about fancy stats. I'm doing so much more. - Atomic Wedgie
Guess who has a NTC!!!!!!!??? If you need me, I'll be at the cottage. See you at training camp, female doges. |

Ummm no. You can't get good players in the later rounds if there isn't any good players in the later rounds. You make it sound like draft position isn't important. There's maybe 1 player per year picked way late that becomes something. They don't become something solely because the team knew how to develop them. |

Absolutely. I'd love to see them add another pick if possible and grab Barzal, My personal $0.02 puts him as being one of the potential steals of the draft. There's lots of other very intriguing prospects there that really could turn into very solid NHLers... I'm excited for the new direction anyway |

When the drafts are this deep, it is the same percentage? Interesting to see going back to another very deep draft. |

Yea, really liking Barzal, too.
Marner, Barzal, and Nylander would be a pretty damned nice start to the forward side of the rebuilding process. |

I can see how you would feel this way, being an Oilers fan. They haven't drafted anything worthwhile in later rounds.
However, plenty of good players get drafted late, or some not at all. Just this past year we had Johnny Hockey, Mark Stone and Tyler Johnson who all fit the description. There's guys like Nyquist on Detroit as well. I'm not feeling like looking it up, but there's definitely a good amount of players who are drafted late and become important pieces |

But if you view it as relative to their draft position, then you absolutely can. Nobody expects a 7th round pick to turn into a superstar, but if you can take someone in the 7th and turn them into a full-time NHLer, then you've done your job. I've been impressed with the track record of Thommie Bergman (our Euro scout) who has identified some decent players with those later round (4-7) picks in recent history... |

Whoa....this is a deep draft...meaning you can probably get a top line player between 20 and 30....doesn't mean it's loaded with Alfreddsons in the 4th round. |

Such as?
Also...if you turn a 7th rounder into an NHLer but miss on your 4th, 5th and 6th round picks....did you do your job then? |
