We can agree as Leaf fans that no matter who they pick, they need home runs on these two picks.

But if you view it as relative to their draft position, then you absolutely can. Nobody expects a 7th round pick to turn into a superstar, but if you can take someone in the 7th and turn them into a full-time NHLer, then you've done your job. I've been impressed with the track record of Thommie Bergman (our Euro scout) who has identified some decent players with those later round (4-7) picks in recent history...

How do we quantify "deep"?
- hscesq

Lots of scouts and hockey insiders say it is a deep draft, I have no idea how deep it goes though.

If we could somehow get another pick I'd love Hanifin, Zacha, Harkins in the first. Would be awesome.

More players with likely NHL careers than usual? More high end talent later in the 1st round than usual?

When the drafts are this deep, it is the same percentage? Interesting to see going back to another very deep draft.
- LeafMan

This draft expected to be a deepp draft class is mainly because of:

- 1 franchise player
- 1 super #1 C
- 3-5 that are equal/better than 1st picks other drafts
- 6-20 all 'top10' pick potential, and 20-40 being 'first round' material.

I am not sure the whole draft class (round 2-7) is considered to be better quality as other years?

If we get another top-10 pick, I'd love Marner & Barzal. If we get a mid-round pick... I wouldn't mind Roy or Erikson Ek

I'd love for the Leafs to grab Hanifin at #4 and Harkins at 24..

If they get another high first rd pick, and get Barzal... I think we'd be well on our way to respectability again.

if you've got 40 picks worth of 1st round material, you can expect the more average players that you'd see in other drafts get pushed down, so you'll have 2nd round talent in the 3rd, 3rd round talent in the 4th, etc.

Skill isn't a 0 sum commodity... so just because you have a talented group at the top, doesn't mean you're going to see less talent later on.

bold prediction:

nothing will happen trade-wise, we'll draft marner and a decent looking prospect at 24 that will take the Percy route, where most people forget he exists, and people will say teh Leafs aren't actually rebuilding anymore, because they got Babcock.

Very shallow and silly way to draft if you ask me... what do appearances have to do with it?

Unless there was something special in the tap water in 1996, there is not a reason to believe 'all players' are better. I understand your reasoning, but it might as well be that there are 'just' 10-20players better than 'usual' and rest are 'as always' (so a drop after the 'extra' 20)

The 3rd part ( about the 3-5)....not how it is at all. Go back to 2003 , the greatest draft class of all time and tell me that's true.
