Yes but 2nds can be used for those. Get Chabot and Juulsen and we have a good future defense pool unless they slack in dev. lots of other potential D in 2nd round as well. Get a highish 1st for centre and use 23 for chabot, then use 2nd's we get for D. I'd be ok drafting like 3-5 D in late first and 2nd depending on trades JB does.

Would love to see them trade up for Barzal but I don't think we have the assets for it and even if we do, it's just unlikely that it happens.

We need a stud D more than we do a number 1 center at this point, I'd be more worried about getting a Top 3 sniper than a center. Who do we have that can score goals and who'll be ready for top-line duty after Daniel goes. Shinkaruk MIGHT, but time will tell, Virtanen will likely be the straw that stirs the drink on the 1st line. Our D on the other hand, looks Edmonton bad after next year.

Like top 10 scorers grow on trees? Come on man, he's not danny of 10-12 but he's still a 1st line player

Draft lots of D In 2nd and trade for forwards later? most #1/2 dmen are found in 2nd rounder. If we can manage to draft 2 future #1 dmen they can be traded for that #1 centre later.

I'd say if say 3 teams have done it in the history of the draft, its fair to say its not gonna happen

Don't trample on my dreams ><

Benning claims to come from a family of scouts. This is his time to prove it. Draft 2 #1 dmen so we can use one on our future #1 centre.

Which is why you do it now, the Sedins will play out their contracts which gives you time to groom someone in their places. Once Hamhuis and Bieksa's contract expire you're going to be left with Edler (who's barely adequate as #2, let alone #1 D), Tanev (who you'll be lucky to get 5 goals and 15 points out of), Sbisa (don't need to go into his deficiencies), Clendenning (a #4 2nd PP QB /MAYBE/), Corrado (same as Tanev but might be slightly more physical), Pedan (a #6/7 at best) and Traymkin (IF he decides to play in NA which isn't assured as he's Russian and making good money in the KHL despite the league's problems).

We need a stud D now because we don't have the prospect cupboard full of NHL-ready players that we can afford to give up to get a young stud D (and honestly, teams that draft and develop potential stud D are NOT going to trade them unless they have more than one and that rarely if ever happens). Look what happened to Nashville, with Jones getting better, in about 3 years Weber might be made expendable, and who would have ever expected that?

Keith, Seabrook, Weber, Suter kind of guys all played for several years, two to three, before making their NHL debuts.

Ryan McDonagh spent, after being drafted, three years in college and half a year in the American League before he played his first game.

This sounds wildly superficial, but I think if you want to find a true number one dman you need to find someone who is tough and imposing and at least has the potential to grow an effing beard. No one wants to play against Keith and Weber because they are big strong and not afraid to throw down, not because they score points in junior hockey.
