If that's truly how you feel, then there's no point to your post other than your avatar. These two are main assets we have that can bring back significant pieces to help launch the rebuild. Imagine if Shanny said Jusst get rid them, who cares what we get in return. That's ridiculous.

just stare into my eyes OK. Of course there will be a return but subtraction at this point is important to building just as much as getting pieces to add. You have to admit their the problem here before you build this sack of pi$$ team back up. To me management has to agree that's the problem and then gather assets, picks and prospects. Lately all I hear is how much better Phaneuf and Kessel are going to be under Babcock. I call BS - get rid of them and enough of the keep 'em talk. I do not want them on the Leafs next year, I do not care what the return is right now because we are not winning with them and won't win with their replacements for years, so again who cares because nobody knows how those picks and prospects will turn out. We know how salary dumps play out.

agreed. its asinine to say who cares what we get back. if we want to get this rebuild going properly, we need to maximize the return we get on kessel as much as we can. if we need to take a salary dump to get even more assets, do it. same with phaneuf. both these players have value. i can't wait to see what happens.

and lums, i agree. i think we all will be a bit disappointed with the return on phaneuf, but i think we should be happy with the return on kessel

I'd go Strome and Kylington! I think Kylington is ranked too low!

I agree they need to be dealt and need to be dealt in the next few weeks because this is the draft you want to stockpile picks in. For the culture to change these two have to go....not because they're bad players, but because there will be no culture change if either of them stay. Having said that, aside from JVR, I believe these two pieces will bring us the most return in trades, but we have to maximize the return if they are to mean anything. We can't just be giving them away. As much as I want picks in this draft I would be willing to wait until deeper into the summer to deal them if it means making the right deals for the most return. They should not, however, be wearing Leaf jerseys come September.

Okay, A few questions on opinion.

1: Ideal return for a Kessel trade (team and players)

2: How far back are you willing to trade back in the draft? to who for what?

3: What is going to happen with Phaneuf?

- steve362

1. Top Prospect, #1 pick, $$ contract …give or take.
2. Not the early pick. Later, sure.
3. Detroit. Weiss, Smith, Top Prospect

"Mark Hunter knows how to identify players, we need picks, we have to get Mark some picks" - Mike Babcock
He's actually saying, we need to get rid of the high priced help that hasn't worked out aound here. Namely Phaneuf and Kessel! He wants to turn them into picks for Hunter and we'll see in 3-5 years what we can do. And oh "pain is coming" this is it!

that would also be a nice tandem to pick up in the 1st round. basically our future #1C and #2C if Eriksson Ek turns out.

mine was marner and harkins. harkins is compared to krejci. imagine having marner with his comparable of gilmour/kane, paired with someone like harkins. would be nice

Okay. And this is true. So we have to maximize the return on these two players. That's what I'm saying. I've seen a lot of proposals on here with Kessel and Phaneuf getting dealt together, but that's near impossible. That would require a team taking on $15 million of cap hit. Also, we'll get way more of a return if they're dealt separately.

agreed. deal them separately. they both have a few options to go to. if both trades include a salary dump on their side, we should expect an even better return.

OK I'm being rhetorical when I say nothing. I don't know why you would take it literal as in "Nothing" whtever you think we're getting will amount to nothing in the short-term. We need to set-up for losing or what's the point?

How do you figure that's what he's saying? It looks he's simply saying the Leafs need some picks, maybe he just means trading down for a few more picks?

I have no problem with that. I actually encourage it. By the time we're competitive, those cap dumps will be close to if not completely off the books. The collection of picks, prospects and young players is key.

Plus you never know, sometimes cap dumps work out. Lupul was a cap dump but he turned it around, until the injuries started piling up.

There's a report out of Finland that Rantanan is a guy they really like, he toured Toronto the Air Canada centre and met some coaching staff and such..

Can't see that happening. Seems like Toronto is a place Rantanen really likes though. Would be a good pick in the 6-15 range but the Leafs need a home run.
