Then they can have Hanifin instead of Rychel and werenski.

It'd be smart to dangle that carrot in front of a team like Columbus who could use more star power

- Just5

I'm just saying that if I'm the Leafs, I'm going to want a team to overpay for that pick, by as much as possible. If the Jackets stay at 8, who is to say that all 3 of Hanifin, Provorov and Werenski are all gone?

That's a bit of a factor, too, although I'm not sure to what extent. I think that skating ability is more important, but I think that they will still like to have size and some snarl in the mix.
- Jsaquella

Yes, obviously they guard that stuff. But if you list out the players from the last 3-4 drafts and compare, it seems a different scorecard was used.

Me neither, but you and I tend to value similar qualities in players. I'm saying, if Hextall really felt he had to have a big power LW for 1st line, I'd rather see him go that route with 29 and Bittner than 7 and Crouse.

I'm still holding out for Barzal and Svechnikov.

- TheGreat28

That would be a nice draft.

I've seen a lot of Fazleev and he'll chase the puck but I don't think the label "Grinder" has ever gotten anywhere near him. I haven't seen him in more than a few dust ups let alone a fight.
- mayorofangrytown

Yeah, rather than "grinder" substitute bottom six skill set, if it's more fitting

The question is, what do you have to give up to get high enough to draft Svech. Laughton? B Schenn? Next year first? A couple of 2nds/3rds?

Agreed. I think that you may have seen Tuch or Kapanen over Sanheim in past years, and maybe a guy like Hunter Smith instead of Aube-Kubel

That's the pressing question. Obviously the 29/30 pick is involved, I'd guess a kid like Laughton or maybe the Chicago 2nd and possibly one of the 3rd rounders.

Good examples. Ironically Tuch was my guy last year but I think they hit a home run with Sanheim.

In all honesty, he reminds me of Merkley with less of a finishing touch. I guess it's what you see Merkley becoming in how you gauge Fazleev. Fazleev is right there, the pucks just don't go in for him.

OB & I had 7 or 8 names. Not 100% sure of the order, but I know we had Sanheim, Larkin, Honka, Milano, Tuch, Barbashev and Fabbri on it. Probably had Goldobin and Kapanen among the list, as well.

I do know that me an him were hi-fiving when Sanheim was announced and some of the folks near us looked at us like we had three heads.

I'd trade Laughton and the 29/30 pick IF they a) got Barzal, and b) either Connor or Svechnikov, probably Meier, we're still on the board when the trade opp came up.

I like some other guys - Konecny and Merkley - but with their size I don't know if I'd trade a highly regarded prospect plus the pick to get them.

There's some of that, sure. I think Merkley is more opportunistic for sure, and has a higher ceiling.

Here is a deal that I could both see happening and would like to see happen:

To Dallas: Luke Schenn, Tampa's 1st and our first pick in the 3rd round

To Philly: the 12th overall pick

Yeah, Milano was on my list for sure, but he was already picked when our turn came up. I don't remember all of the others.

I've been kinda tracking my amateur GM stats against the actually picks, 1st round only. Criteria is no fantasy trades, since we don't really know what the offers would be. I pick based on who was available when we pick. Then compare my picks vs. actual.

Mine - Tuch, Pulock, Maata, Couts (I really wanted Hamilton before the draft but picked Couts when he slid).

Flyers - Sanheim, Morin, Laughton, Couts

I think overall my picks are at least comparable vs. who was actually picked, if you had to take one set or the other.

Yeah, Honka, Larkin and Milano were all gone. We just got our lists together and picked guys likely to go at or near the Flyers pick.

Stanley cups are won on defense and at center. Power wingers are the most overhyped players in the NHL. They do all the things fans love, score goals and make big hits, but are usually bit players on winning teams. You can guys to do that job all over the draft.

Draft defense or center at 7.

- psuhockey

I agree with you to a certain extent. Wingers are the least important position in hockey, which is not to say that aren't important. They are, just defense, goaltending and centers are far more important. I'd like the Flyers, if they're going to draft a forward, to draft a player with speed and skill, and preferably decent size. Crouse seems to me like he's going to be a real good player, but I'm thinking more like Patrick Kane, and less like Dustin Brown.

I've done a similar thing. Felt the same way as you about Couts and Hamilton. In 2012, when Teravainen was sliding I really wanted him to fall to us but when Chicago grabbed him, I wanted Maatta (gotta love those Fins). In 2013, I wanted Pulock, Zadorov, Morrissey, or Wennberg. And last year (like this year), there was a bunch of players I liked. Can't lie, I was kind of pulling for Kapanen but loved the Sanheim selection.

I would do it if you could get 7 - 10 spots higher. Considering it also relieves salary cap pressure. And I don't bash Luke as much as some. To me, he's still an asset that has value.

flyers possibly hiring the erie otters coach because they plan to move up and take strome???? imagine if they could pull that off and still take provorov at 7.......wake me up, somebody

- hogweed

If they're moving up in the draft, they won't have the 7th pick anymore.
