Supply and demand. Every team needs a stud workhorse and above average bodies to fill out the top 4. There aren't enough stud workhorses to go around and the trickle down effect on teams lacking the workhorse means they have to sell out and overpay to try and compensate. Not that you didn't know this just pointing out why I think teams have upped the going rate for d-men

That was a great read and you made an amazing point. This could easily be another Jones situation where Hanifin drops to Carolina and they end up picking one of the best in the draft.

First off great read. I agree that you really can't go wrong selecting the best available defenseman in the draft. That being said, In my opinion I don't believe Hanifin will be a top 5 pick. Judging by team needs (excluding Edm / Buf) it's clear Arizona, Toronto, & Carolina are in desperate need for Center / Forward.

If the rumours are true and Toronto does pull off a blockbuster trade to acquire Carolina's 5th overall pick, then expect Rielly / Hanifin combo to be scary in a few years.

I remember being jealous of the Leafs when they took Schenn. He looked like a sure thing.

Trouba was another one that I was high on leading up to the draft. He however, has turned into a real good player.

This draft class is completely unknown to me. Didn't watch the WJC which is generally where I gather my limited opinion on the young guys.
