If ROR signs for 7 years at 7 million, it means his contract value is 49 million.
Crosby signed a 104 million dollar contract. It's not even remotely close to be the same thing.
Come on people, let's be serious here. - Pecafan Fan
We know Marty, but thanks for pointing the difference between the cap hit and the actual pay.. |

It's almost at ridiculous as people using Weber or Suter's numbers to make Phaneuf's contract look worse. Not that anyone here would ever do that. |

Yeah, Crosby could easily get more, he just went with a number that looked like his jersey number because, at that point what's a few extra million - Schenn-Sational!
ROR's contract would end when he's 31 and still has a few good not great years ahead of him.
Crosby's contract runs until he's 37 and his career will long be over (form a production standpoint).
And when Crosby signed his new deal, the salary cap was around 59-60 million.
The cap will be over 70 million next season. It's not the same circumstances at all. |

It's the opportunity cost (aka cap hit) that's way out to lunch: Crosby's a guy you can build a team around, ROR is not. |

The salary cap was 10 million lower when crosby signed his 8.7 "cap hit" contract.
It also means his cap hit will still be 8.7 million when he can barely lace up his skates by himself at 37 when his brain will look like a bowl of jello. |

Leafs just bought 5.25m of 'opportunity cost' by trading away clarkson.
basically, retaining 1.5m on Phaneuf's salary in a deal, and signing a guy like ROR for 7m for 6y (instead of 6million for the same years) still is 2.75m less in caphit/opportunity cost than having Clarkson on your team.

you don't know this.
the true elite in general tend to have more value at late stage (35+) in their careers.
jagr might be a true exception, but take a look at a guy like sakic who was still getting points and playing well in his late 30s |

O'Reilly is going to get 7mil next year no matter what happens. He's a 25 year old UFA with 55+ point play and near Selke level defense. He's gonna get paid. Feaster (frank)ed the Avs hard with that offer sheet, otherwise he would have been an RFA again. |

His concussion history leads me to think he'll be quite banged up at the sweet age of 37.
But I'm just speculating. |

Crosby won't be one of those guys. There were already questions about him return due to concussions. |

O I agree that it might be possible and even probable he will retire before 37, depending on injuries (like all players).
If anything, his concussion history led to a 2million discount on his contract (he signed the extension after being out for 8months +) - Crosby would normally be in the 10m/y caphit range at least (nothing to do with 'taking a discount for the team' imo). |

I think O'Reilly will be worth it as a UFA. Trading for him would be dumb though. |
