The talk of him being untradeable and that the leafs would have to take a bad contract in return is foolish.

Maybe in the case of Phaneuf (the bad contract à la Semin), but not for Kessel I don't think.

I think the Leafs will take salary back on any deal involving either player. Phaneuf because he's overpaid for what he brings and Kessel because of straight up economics in a cap world, just to make the deal work on the other end.

It's pretty hard to pinpoint the "right" contract for a guy. Phaneuf @ 5.5 (or less) would be a steal but would 6 mil plus be overpayment?

I think the 7mill contract may slightly hinders his trade value but it's not such a crazy overpayment like some are making it out to be.

Dion's contract looks fine now compared to the UFA D-Men signed last summer. People have blind hatred.

I am worried a bit....not because I think he will break down from overuse of body, like Clarkson....but because the guy relies so heavily on his speed and doesn't seem to really take care of himself. I think if Kessel loses a step, it will have a big negative effect on his game.

I have also heard Leafs say the guy is a freak of nature. That his leg strength is mind boggling. However, unless he is keeping super fit by properly working out and good eating habits and not because of genetic luck, it will decline quickly as he moves into his 30's.

I don't know - can't say if it's something he was born with or something he works on...
