yup, its a gamble, but overspend on a player early, at least you can deal with that, trades, buy outs, etc and it wont handicap your team.

Playing hardball and refusing to sign a guy at 5m one season and before you know it, you are having to pay him 9m in a few seasons instead (Subban).

amazing player, just a lot of baggage that has come with him bc of that offer sheet.
If they Avs just would have signed him to that 5-6 year deal that he was looking for back then.

Just shows when you think you have a young core player, dont mess around with them forcing them to take bridge deals, extend them long term

This isn't the only problem in buying in early and incorrectly. You're not just buying in literally, you've decided that said player is good enough to build around and you start adding pieces accordingly. When that player doesn't end up producing anywhere near expected, the whole team falters.

Its not a fool proof system but sometimes you have to gamble on a player in hopes you get your sweet heart deal. Look at Josi for the preds, they locked him up early and his contract is gold, who would have thought he would have became probably better than Suter once he left.

Hm.. You'd think it would be all ready determined that if a player is an RFA (Property of that team) That if they decide to play for another league that that club or the league as a whole pay a fee to the team for essentially stealing him away.

Well the issue is he wants a one way we want a two way. So if Murray knows he going to KHL we should just put the two way offer in so its locked.
