First off - thanks for the quantity and quality of your blogs Todd, it's nice to read a new one every day!
I notice however that whenever the topic of goaltenders for next season comes up, you frequently leave Ortio out of the discussion. Are you not confident in his ability to back up Hiller next year? I think he has the potential to emerge as the #1...thoughts? |

Thanks a lot.
As for Ortio I'd prefer some of the other free agent options over him (Neuvirth, Greiss, etc.) but I like him and would be fine with CGY giving him a shot. |

Amen! You were getting me spooked about the goaltending situation. I just don't see where Talbot was a clear cut above Hiller. Talk about a recipe for disaster. Let the Oilers give up the 16th for him. If Ortio isn't ready, resign Ramo for 2-3 years. Run that tandem again before giving up any assets. Maybe we flip Ramo to Buffalo for a 3rd or something. |

I personally feel we should be doing what we can to sign ramo. Give him the same as hiller for 2/3 years. Last year both hiller and Ramo had good and bad moments. From what I seen of them last year I can't really peg one as being better then the other. But I dont think we have seen enough from ramo and I feel he will only get better. Hiller has reached his ceiling. I think it would be ideal to sign ramo, trade hiller and go with a ramo, ortio combo until we actually figure out what we have. I get that bt is exploring options but there is no need to trade for a goalie that would be a slight upgrade in net (if any). |

Apparently Florida is open to trading their pick away. The report mentioned that they were after scoring help, but they have also been rumored to be after a backup goalie (preferably a young goalie with upside to take over for Luongo).
Do you guys think their could be a deal in place to trade say:
Ortio
15th overall
for Florida's 11th overall?
This might not be a bad deal, and could explain why we've been rumored to be in on so many young goalies. If they did do this I'd still rather see them resign Ramo, but I'm willing to bet that he doesn't want to share the role with Hiller for another year.
Edit:
At 11 someone like Crouse, Provorov/Werenski, Rantanen could be available. So a deal like this could be very dependent on how the first 10 picks shake out at the draft. |

Don't disagree but I think he is willing to test FA and see what is offered. My opinion is he wants a legit opportunity at being a #1 and if there is a money offer and a chance, and save the Flames countering with a ridiculous offer, he's gone
I'd rather have Ramo than Hiller but as an RFA, the ball is in Ramo's court. |

Nope... if that name is Hiller + then... but not Ortio. 11-15 isn't enough of a move to make that deal...

I could see them moving up if the guy they want is available, and they do conceivably have the goaltending depth to do it, but then you have to question what happens if they move Ortio and can't re-sign Ramo/trade for Talbot? |

Thanks for the blogs Todd!
Keep em coming.
I wonder (as someone has previously posted) if BT has not been playing games to drive up Talbot's price? I really have no clue how the whole world of GM's making trade proposals and whatnot works, but I like to think that it would involve trying to screw you rivals over.
It would seem that it's Ortio's year to show that he can be a backup. If they feel like that is not the case then I he should be traded.
Is anyone familiar with any reason that MGMT might have lost faith in him?

In Ortio? No nothing I've read or heard. Usually the CalgaryPuck guys have some insider knowledge but I haven't heard anything... |

Thanks man.
Yeah, just wondering if there might be a reason they are thinking he is not ready to be a backup.
Difficult trying to figure out WTF is going on.

I wouldn't part with Ortio for moving up just 4 spots. I would part with Ortio & our #45 to get that 11th. Resign Ramo & problem solved. |

2015 1st round pick (15th)
to Florida
2015 1st round pick (11th)
Blacker (Who is currently an RFA)
McFarland (Who is an RFA)
Both of these prospects seem to be burried in their system that may be worth a chance |

Ya I have a feeling that the only way Ramo resigns is if they deal Hiller. Florida would want a younger goalie for them to groom. If BT believes that Gillies and Macdonald have higher ceilings then I could see him trading Ortio, letting Ramo walk, and bringing in another mid-aged goaltender with potential to act as a stop gap when Hiller is likely either traded or walks as an UFA after next season.
I think a deal with Florida would depend on several factors (deals with other teams for a replacement goalie and/or a deal to bring Ramo back) Also, i think they'd pull the trigger if a guy they really like is still available at 11.
I really don't think that our 2nd + Ortio would be good enough to get 11th overall, if it is I'd make that deal yesterday.
In other words:

That's an interesting theory. I'm sure he wouldn't hate driving up the price for an inner-division team like Edmonton or San Jose. |

I believe I said awhile ago that I thought BT may have just watched Django and could be playing a game pretending that he is after a goalie when he really had his eyes on another player the whole time.
Driving up the price could be just as likely. He could either be attempting to create a higher market for Hiller, or just trying to screw the Oilers over in general (which would be ok in my books too ).
Both of these scenarios seem more likely to me than us adding yet another young goalie into our system . |

The only reason I can think of that the Flames should be trading for a goalie this offseason is that the market is glutted with them and the prices should be relatively low. I have no idea what the market will be like next year, but if they don't resign Ramo, Hiller decides to walk after next year, and Ortio doesn't pan out, then they'd be screwed in net next year. Looking at goalies this offseason seems like buying an insurance policy on 2016-2017. As close as Gillies might be, counting on him to step in next year (and on Ortio being able to take over the starter job) seems overly optimistic. I'd rather they sign Ramo for a few more years, but I understand why BT is scoping the market now. |
