Jordan Greenway is a guy I'd love to see them take. He's a LW at 6-4 224 pounds and will go somewhere in the middle of the first round. I wouldn't wanna trade Brayden Schenn though. He's not that far away from hitting his stride. And at only 2.5 mil this season, he's a lot of bang for his buck and he's young and still growing as a player. It's also a plus he can play all three forward positions. Hopefully he can carry over his pace that he ended the season with into next season. It would be freakin sick if they got Proporov and Greenway somehow though. Or Crouse and Greenway. - TonyBazz
I actually think Greenway will be on the board at 29. He's kind of fallen off a lot of boards. The size definitely intrigues me but the offense hasn't come for him the way scouts were predicting.
Could be a steal though. Especially if the plan is to ultimately get him with G. |

I'm only leaning towards D because that winger can eventually be had via trade. You just don't get to trade for D men that went top 10 unless something is wrong with them.
Sanhiem seems like a hit but that is no guarantee. And Morin is still a huge wildcard. Hanifin, Provorov or Werenski would go a long way to solidifying a core back there. - hereticpride
True, the issue is, Provorov & Hanifin may be gone by 7. Then is Werenski the BPA? Might be. I am good with him, too
Still easier& usually cheaper to add wingers than D |

I wouldn't have an issue with Werenski at 7. He's going to Columbus at 8 if we don't take him imo. |

I want a D man at 7 then BSchenn packaged with 29 to move up as far as possible for the best LW available.
Probably won't happen but whatever. - hereticpride

I had thought the Flyers could have gotten some cheap and easy scoring with a guy like PA Parentau.
Yeah, the #1 to #3 D spot is tough to fill, but is this team going to be molded like the Kings were or something else? Presumably they will draft for a system or plan for a system in place (and do they know what Hakstol will institute??) or is it just BPA who may not be the right guy and we have regrets forever

Mock Draft updates:
Gare Joyce -
7. Philadelphia Flyers: Mikko Rantanen, RW, Turku
A prototypical power forward. Comparisons to Joel Armia are not operative. Rantanen has a better motor. (still on the board... Werenski, Barzal, Connor, Crouse, Zacha. Meier goes 27th)
29. Philadelphia Flyers: Filip Chlapik, C, Charlottetown Islanders
Recent drafts have been focused on the blueline. Some scouts don’t like his skating and think he lacks a fourth gear or even a third. Goalie Mackenzie Blackwood a shot here.
Damien Cox -
7. Philadelphia Flyers: Mikko Rantanen, RW, Turku (still on the board... Werenski, Barzal, Connor, Crouse, Zacha, Meier)
29. Philadelphia Flyers (from Tampa Bay): Colin White, C, U.S. NTDP
Jeff Marek -
7. Philadelphia Flyers
Ivan Provorov, D, Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL): A truly gifted player who does it all for the Brandon Wheat Kings. The Flyers' blueline will be set for the next 10 years with Provorov, Travis Sanheim, Samuel Morin and Shayne Gostisbehere. (still on the board... Werenski, Barzal, Connor, Crouse, Rantanen, Meier)
29. Philadelphia Flyers (from Tampa Bay)
Brock Boeser, RW, Waterloo (USHL): The Flyers pick up the hardworking winger who put up big points in the USHL.
Here's a collection with some crazy people involved.

If he falls to 29, he'd be an absolute steal. He's not NHL ready though. He'd probably take about as long as JVR did to enter the NHL. D Brandon Carlo would be a steal at 29 too. Probably pipe dreams though . |

I always lean towards BPA for system. So long as the gap between that player and the overall BPA isn't huge. Laughton over Maata is a pretty good example of the Flyers NOT doing this imo.

Just like BPA is, BPA for system is subjective. And wouldn't taking Maata over Laughton be drafting for need? I really don't think drafting 18 year olds should be based on what kind of system a team plays at the NHL level. That would be a mistake imo. |

The system the franchise plays under when a player is drafted is probably rarely the system they play when he does finally make it to the NHL. |

Certainly a possibility. It's hard enough to figure out if a player is going to be a good NHL player, let alone a good player who is a fit for our system. |

Therein lies the rub as the old cliche goes.
What are you trying to build?
I would love to sit in on a projected depth chart/drafting/roster and cap projection sets of meetings. Something beyond scouts reports that indicates the rationale used by committee to draft players and assemble a roster as they plan for this and future years.
Maata vs Laughton... arghhh.

Trying to build a hockey team. Why arghhh for Maata vs Laughton? Laughton's NHL career is just getting started. Who is to say he's not the better player in the long run? |

Canes blog has Luke Schenn as a possible trade target.
I'm assuming their offer at best would be the 35th overall. That would be an interesting move. I'd kind of prefer they keep Luke over Grossmann tbh. |

I'd take 35 for Luke, could possibly get Blackwood. |

Even if he's not the better player, if Maatta can't stay healthy, it could still turn out to be the better pick.
If Maatta didn't play a position of such dire need, I really doubt anybody would have given a (frank) that they passed on him. You'd think they passed on Jacob Trouba to take Laughton or something. |

That's mixing issues and applying a standard of need, to determining the better pick. If your philosophy is BPA, and Laughton winds up the better player, which in itself can be subjective, then the Flyers made the right pick in choosing Laughton over Maata.

I can see Hexy choosing a forward if Provorov or Hanifin is off the board. It sure seemed like Hexy's first draft was filled with prospects who had not come close to their ceiling. I can see him valuing a Zacha and Connor more over prospects like Crouse or even Barzel.
Under the Lombardi model, the Kings used a bunch of premium picks on the blueline earlier in his tenure. I expect that to continue with the first couple of drafts under Hextall. |

I'd prefer to move Grossman, but 35 in this draft should be a quality player. If Grossman would yield a 2nd round pick then I'd move him. |
