The jury is out on long term deliberation of Maata vs Laughton, it will take years I agree.
But this team has had a real identity and style crisis for years with the patchwork lineups and UFA's. You know what the Bruins style is, you know what the Hawks bring etc. The team really had had no specific direction/style with building a roster towards that goal/direction.
All that we debate here is part of the result of not having the insight or shared knowledge of the teams direction/style/system. - Steelmanpa
I think a few things are being confused here. I think the lack of success of winning the Cup is being confused with not having an identity. The Flyers as a franchise in terms of winning percentage, are at the tops of the league. Pretty good for not having a specific direction or style, or lacking identity. They've struggled the last few years for a variety of reasons, but I don't see it as a lack of direction or identity. LA with their direction and identity, missed the playoffs this past season.

If I'm tossing away assets I'd like to at least get back someone who can put the puck in the net not some guy who only preforms when they're threatening to repossess his BMW. |

I was unaware that Vinny and Luke Schenn were such valuable assets |

I'm salivating at the thought of umberger, vinny, grossman, luke, and Rinaldo donning the Orange and black again. I've got no time for this nonsense either - Just5

You guys do know Semin is over 30, carrying a 7 million dollar cap hit and hasn't eclipsed 50 points in years, right? - hereticpride
He's only really had one terrible year (last season). Before that, he was scoring like a 2nd-line winger... in 12-13, he was point per game. You have to figure that he's not gonna shoot 6.5% again, even if he shows up lazy and disinterested... and if he keeps missing games due to health/scratch, so be it.
Lest we forget the guy we'd be ridding ourselves of is a completely useless piece of poop... Semin >>> VL.
Schenn I'd rather keep (he's RH after all), but if it takes him to get that trade done, bubye Luke. |

I would throw him on G's line then hope to sell him next offseason for a draft pick. (And eat salary of course) - PhillySportsGuy
Yeah, I have much more confidence that he can bounce back and recover some value, versus Vinny who can't keep up with the pace of the game at all anymore and everybody knows it. |

Biggest concern I'd have is how Semin's AAV affected re-signing Voracek, Couturier & Baby Schenn by next summer. Of course, next season is actually a wash, losing $4.5mm of Vinny and $3.6 of Luke clears more room than Semin takes, and maybe an Umberger buy out is more doable with Vinny gone.
Of course if Semin doesn't rebound it's a harder buyout and more difficult to trade him to a budget team, with a$7mm a year salary |

Rule of thumb, if a player who once achieved greatness is available to the flyers, it's a trap. |

Hey, new guy here so don't beat me up too bad. Longtime listener, first time caller. How would you guys feel if we traded our first overall in a package deal to unload Vinny or AMac for a mid level prospect? This would give us some flexibility during free agency, and some room to resign some of our impending free agents such Del Zotto, and a goalie. We got guys on both ends of the ice in the minors who are ready to play, and soon enough we are going to have to give Voracek a raise. Thoughts? |

2 things:
1) Pet peeve of mine. It's not "first overall", it's our first round pick (i.e. 7th overall).
2) Hell no. Trading a potential high end talent for 4 or 5 million dollars in cap space is not what I'd go for. Plus, you say we could use that space to look at re-signing impending FAs, sign Del Zotto, and re-sign Voracek. This is 4 or 5 million, not 14 or 15 million.
Thanks for calling. Welcome to the circus! |

They really don't have any forwards in their system ready to play besides possibly Laughton and he's no sure thing. I really think we are all stressing over Vinny for nothing. The mutual termination of his contract has a good shot of happening, it benefits both sides greatly and makes too much sense not to happen |

Nothing would surprise me. Especially since I got an MDZ jersey at the 2nd to last home game when home jerseys were like 70% off. I fully expect him gone for that reason alone |

That would be a poor trade. MacDonald is a solid defenseman that we are better off keeping. I'd rather keep Lecavalier, then make that deal. I don't know how many players in the minors that are ready to play. I think Laughton is the only high percentage player ready to make the leap.
