yup. Cutting out carbs is a great way to lose weight, but to maintain a healthy lifestyle, eating complex carbs is actually really good for you.

I eat beans. There's protein and fiber. Works wonders on the ladies too.

Wait, Dion For E.Staal?

One for one?

Why in the hell would Carolina do that?

Not a chance.

- BINGO!

you lose weight because cutting out all the carbs puts you in ketosis, where your body takes it's energy straight from the fat stores.

Cavemen weren't inherently healthier than us, and the human body is amazingly good at adapting to different types of food, so that rationalization for the diet is bad... but the diet itself is pretty good, because it cuts out most of the insanely processed sugars that spike your blood sugar, and trigger your body to start storing more fat.

They were a heck of a lot leaner than we are today!! I also went to over 300 lbs once and also acquired type two diabetes in the process. That "fad" allowed me to lose the meds altogether. I agree with lums on a healthy balance, but I don't need simple carbs like starches, I need complex carbs. I still eat sweet potato fwiw.

Its all balance. Too much of any one side will mess with a persons health. A big thing is food portions. The wife is down to pre-wedding weight after 2 kids now, simply by reducing the portions of food, after that the weight went down and she feels great. Most people would be shocked to get an actual "portion" of meat on their plate, it's only the size of a deck of cards.... Over there you guys have smaller portions in restaurants, its getting better here but...
- aminnes

meh, you can get away with eating lots of meat. your body is pretty inefficient at turning it into energy or fat stores.

as far as macronutrients go, carbohydrates are the top thing to watch for weight loss/maintenance

i never called it a fad, I'm just saying that the whole "our ancestors ate it" justification just sounds nice, but doesn't carry much weight.

Think about it this way: as a species, we've only been eating tomatoes for ~500 years, unless you're descended from the aztecs.... and we've been cultivating grains and dairy for much, much, much longer than that.

You have to be careful with spinach. Some of those old cans it came in were made out of lead!

This, this, and two more heaping scoops of this.

The main problem with the North American diet today is simply the portions.

People eat too much.

Sure, we can get into a discussion about micro and macronutrients, blah blah blah, but first we need to address the fact that the typical North American restaurant's entree is enough to feed a family of four, and that's without an appetizer.

To be honest, the first week was tough with the weight training, but the body adjusted. When I was doing this, I never felt so good. It wasn't just the results, it was the way I was actually feeling. I had absolutely no afternoon blahs (insulin issues) and had that extra ounce of energy.
