You don't think trading Maatta for Kessel is a good idea do you? - Cptmjl
I wouldn't do that straight up. Make fun of me all you want but I have really high hopes for Maatta. 25 minutes per night defender on PK and Power play. 50 point season ahead of him IMO. |

i think analyzing what players should be making and comparing it to what they are making... as well as using past deals to come up with comparable current deals... is a very sound way of coming up with fair value.
what is your issue with my thoughts? |

Your logic, while making sense numbers wise... doesn't mean the real value is the same. Its sports, not poker... |

Well, I am in a slight denial of Kessel's value, and wanting to believe the rumor that its actually lower because of his cap hit and such.
If it would take just... lets say, Kapanen, Harrington, our 2016 1st, and whatever vet contract they are willing to take on (Scud hopefully, more likely Kunitz), does this become a yes?
I can look at that an call it two 1sts and a 2nd round in value... nothing to sneeze at honestly. - Guile
Iffy. I don't think I do it no matter what. With the assets it will cost, plus the term and his cap hit idk. We would have 4 players with 47% of the cap. We though that we were filling spots with bums before.. imagine what we would have to do now. I'm on the fence but one thing for sure Maatta and Pouliot cannot be dealt. |

I wouldn't make fun of you in any way. I for one think Maatta is awesome. I wouldn't even think of trading him for Kessel. I think that'd be doing exactly what you guys said you didn't want to do anymore. |

It's funny how I said you guys should go after Fehr in free agency before the playoffs started and I was laughed off the thread and now he has seemed to grown in popularity the last few weeks. - Cptmjl
Don't lump me into that group. I've always like Fehr |

Maatta is too good of a player to trade for Kessel. Between Crosby, Malkin, Letang, and now adding Kessel's 8 million dollar a yr salary you'd constantly be inserting at best mediocre to craptastic guys to fill the wings due to salary constraints whether you dump Scuderi or not. I like Kessel as a player but between his contract and overall compete level I'd never give up Maatta for him. Maatta to me should be an untouchable for you guys.
Now if the Leafs retained salary I wouldn't mind the Isles making a play for Kessel but the guy gets paid to much as is. |

I don't think a team would take Maatta either... two injuries in a row... Pouliot is the high value chip if they really wanted Kessel. |

The fact that the money analysis lined up pretty well with the Nash deal is what gave me confidence in that idea.
We just haven't had a lot of trades like the kessel trade recently.
Good players on huge contracts just don't move all that often. |

Mike Colligan was stating the pens have received light offers for Sutter and teams know his weaknesses. |

And each case is its own and there is no solid trend to base it on. |

I had no idea Maatta's stock had dropped so low in some of your minds? |

Exactly. I think we would trade a bright, cap controlled future for a short window of success (and not really because we would be cap screwed)

It hasn't in my mind, and shouldnt in Pens' fans minds... but, I am thinking of it in other GM's views...
Maatta and Pouliot both seem to be the real deal, one has had two big injuries... Would you trade Kessel on a possible big risk? Maatta's value is and should be high, but at least for this next year, he is a risk. |

Brandon Sutter good example: very light offers due to other teams knowing his weaknesses or knowing #Pens desire/need to move him? Both?
Light offers? HEY GUYS THERE ARE OFFERS. ALL MAY NOT BE LOST. |

That's what I said last night. If they do something like that the Pens might have a shot at a cup in the next two or three years, but then their chances fall off a cliff. Kessel deal will be excruciating sooner than later. Maatta is a cornerstone type player. |

I just talked to him about it and he said by light he means they haven't even gotten an offer for a pick in the first two rounds. 3rd round draft pick... thats bad. |

Don't remember who exaclty it was but it was 3 or 4 Pens posters. Guy kills us every time we play them. Love if the Islanders got him on a 2 year deal. |

Yeah he's a great depth player. I would like both Ward and Fehr over here but not likely due to Wards age and wants. |

Well don't get me wrong Kessel is a good player but between his contract/cap hit he becomes difficult to absorb. You're hurting your depth or I should say potential depth by having that salary. You only have so much left to shore up the rest of the team. We all know how awesome it'd be to see Kessel on a line with Crosby but the overall effect on the team might not be so great. As far as Maatta goes there's no way I'd want him traded if I were a Pens fan. Kid has a ton of potential. |

I mentioned him over here because I think he'd be perfect on the Pens(though to be honest I'd hate it if you guys got him). Seems to be exactly what you guys need a little more of. |
