They are still building through the draft. Even with everything they moved this weekend, they still drafted 6 guys. Defense is our biggest hole in the lower ranks right now. They used 4 of the 6 picks on defensemen.

IF we're lucky...
ONE of those defensemen will make the Sabres...
In about 5 years

I know Murray got here with the cupboards stocked, but IMO he's being too aggressive & is definitely overpaying with every trade he makes
That's a bad standard to set
Our assets won't last forever

Personally, I'd rather not wait that long.
- HonkFortheGoose

I agree whole heartedly.

In fact, as soon as Murray finished with Sakic, he immediately went over to O'Reilly's agent and said, "I'm ready to start negotionations now"

This can be applied to the assets we moved as well. Maybe 1 out of five make it. And in returned we acquired more established players that have a better chance of making a difference.

They acquired 4 pieces of their core through the draft (kane, toews, keith, and seabrook) They made some key trades and signings. And they bring in vets on expiring or one year deals. Its pretty much exactly what Buffalo is trying to do.

Yes, and how many of them were on the roster for the 1st cup? How many were drafted before the first cup?

Their core are the four I listed, and they've been filling along as they go.

Not really sure why people are bringing up Hamilton's name as someone we should have went after. By all accounts Boston turned down better offers and the only reason you do that is to get him out of your division/conference.
- BigStew

I still think we should offer sheet him!

There's plenty of players still and I get the feeling that Murray has already done most of what he wanted to. I don't think there's any reason to panic about any of this.

Maybe he's going LA mold. Trade for some young talent. (Kane, oreilly is our Richards and carter). I'll take two cups

Eh... Orgasm's rebuttal makes enough sense. Most of those guys weren't drafted until after the 1st cup win. So as long as we win that first one and keep drafting strong in the early rounds, maybe trading away some UFA's to be we should be fine.

I am not a fan of O'Reilly, but I'm still excited to see what's going on. Bring in two vet dman and this team might be fighting for that mid tier finish 11-20 next year. Which I didn't think was going to be possible.

I was never worried in the first place. We will have 3-4 drafts plus still have 4-5 forward prospects that can turn out before contracts are needed on our core. If we are good with money all our forwards are young

While very good pieces, none are what I'd say is their "core."

And reality is there are probably on 1 or 2 names on that list that actually have a shot at being an impact player in the nhl.

I'd say Saad already is. Teravainen probably could be. That's about it.

It's going to be hard to fill those two d spots for next year. We need a top 2 and a top 4. There is enough out there for the 4 spot, but nothing for the top pairing.

I was referring to the sabres players he listed but yes you're right probably applies there as well. Getting Saad 2nd round and keith on terrific contract is the kind of luck that brings you 3 cups in 6 years.

Petry got 5.5 for 6
