I understand your concerns. You want to win a cup and believe me all of us do.
Its ironic that the Very reason we had to give up more for Lehner than for Lack is the very reason you are conerned about. Murray said it himself, "Lehner's contract has three more years before he would have to get paid IF he turns into our guy" Lack and Talbot will have to be paid next year! Do you see why it costs more to get a guy with a longer Lower Cap hit?
It would've been easy for Murray to take the easy road and grab Lack with one of our 2nd rd picks, but he doesn't have the "Potential" that Lehner has nor does he have the "Contract" - MEBSabresFAN
Good point.
However, GMTM failed to realize that he is getting a goalie with concussion issues, and the other goalie don't have that issue.
He has taken a big risk, and gave up a 1st for it, hence, he got FLEECED.
Yes, other goalies are a little older, but might actually stand a chance to make it.

We needed a good goalie and not a Lindback to play on a team with the talent we are building now and if we traded for Lack or Talbot who are older and as per TM not on the level of Lehner for various reasons, we might be going through this again next year if neither signed.
Look, I hope to God it works out for us.
I just think it was an unnecessary reach by GMTM.
That is all.
Remember, we went through HELL to accumulate these picks.

There is usually crap at the end of the first round. History reflects that.
He got a guy who:
Is a big framed goalie
Is young but doesn't have to broken in
has control over for 4 years
Not that expensive
Better than anything he could have drafted at 21.

I like the fact that he is RFA after this contract.

Lehner probably has as much chance to produce as a prospect picked at 21 so its all really moot at this point. - zdp1189
It's really not.
Unless you are getting a proven top 10 goalie, trading a 1st for one is just plain bad asset management.
One goalie in the cup finals was acquired for Cory Conacher, the other was drafted in one of those rounds where the players never pan out or something someone told me

This was a really deep draft.
If that makes you feel better, have it your way!!!

You and I don't usually agree but, giving up a 1st for Lehner and a boat anchor contract was a bad move. Niemi wins a cup and get's moved for a 6th and Lehner is lucky he can spell his name with his concussions and he brings a 1st. sorry but I would have given a 1st for Gibson and that's about all.

It really is. You act like this is the last draft ever and we need all the picks. What top 10 goalie has been traded for a single late 1st round pick? We had an over abundance of picks and prospects that were going to need to be moved eventually. Is a prospect at 21 any better then 23yr old goalie? Remains to be seen. So yes it is moot point. People cried about how regier held on too long but now were crying for not holding on long enough? Seriously out of all we gave up for kane, ror and lehner what do we wish we still had? Myers, zads and maybe grigorenko? The rest Im sure people wont bat an eye about.

I would have just signed a UFA or given up a 3rd for Talbot.
I actually don't hate the O'Reilly deal too much as long as he resigns
Gringo's camp tried to tell Murray what was going to happen with there client, as most have seen from Murray since he has been here, you don't tell Murray how it will be or it's going to be. - SABRES 89
I like this and that's the way it should be. He's the GM and he calls the shots with the team's personnel. Everyone else should have their say and then Murray makes the call.
I understand agent's are fighting for their client's interest, but if you let them walk all over you then a disaster will soon follow.

So looking forward to Sept/Oct. - 100goalseason
Murray wasn't playing that game at all and he won't, why do you think Hodgson's camp is in contact with Murray for everything Hodgson's doing this offseason. They know what can happen but in Gringo's case his camp thought they knew better and they let Murray know it. Everyone can see where that went.
