Oh I thought he made more from Tampa then 1.7 - JAKEw1234
Got an $8mm bonus up front, then $24.67 spread over 14 years. |

Frankly, that would be a ridiculous thought process on his part because there is no way he is getting that deal. It would be a defacto retirement for him. Do you think he is ready to retire? - MBFlyerfan
There's no way some team wouldn't give him a 1 year deal at even the min salary after he terminates. This ufa class is brutally weak. A team desperate for offense or needing to get closer to the floor will give him a shot. He won't get to play here either so the retirement argument to him not wanting to terminate doesn't make tons of sense. This really is a no Brainer for him after the buyout period ends and he sees were not bluffing |

What if he's upset with the way he's been treated here and would relish the idea of screwing up our cap while still getting paid buku bucks? |

You really think he would do that? Do you not think he wants to play? He surely believes he can still play. He is already getting buku bucks from Tampa for doing nothing.
So unless he is ready to retire, that is the only way he doesn't terminate. Because he is basically retiring at that point, and becomes a practice dummy for 8 months out of the next three seasons.

These are professional athletes with pride, who want to play and make money. I really don't think he would rather sit in the press box for 3 years just to screw up their cap as some childish revenge plot. Sounds ridiculous. But let's say he does...still better to pay him for 3 years instead of 6 in dead money. This team isn't ready to win a cup for at least 2 years when the young D arrive so they don't need the cap space yet that desperately anyway. |

I'm not saying he would. Just that I doubt he's in any rush to help us out. |

I get that. But I don't think helping us out enters in to it. He is helping himself out because first and foremost, I believe he wants to play hockey.

Y'know, previously I would have been skeptical of such an act of god happening in favor of the Flyers. We just saw the Pronger thing disappear in an instant though, so now I believe in miracles. Maybe Vinny really will walk away. |

I'm sure he is pissed off and hating this entire experience since signing here. That's why I expect this to happen. Nobody is taking his contract in trade. It's not about helping us out though. He can help himself out by simply walking away and giving himself a chance to get out and maybe play for a new team next year. If they won't buy him out he doesn't have any other options if he wants out of here. |

All valid points, I guess I'm just conditioned as a philly sports fan to always expect the worst.

The only reason I am expecting the mutual termination to happen is because everything else has gone right this past weekend! Keep the good news coming! |

great explanation
and a great move by them
does it seem like the Flyers have finally figured out the cap? - Marc D
No, they've always had the cap figured out. I've talked about this a lot. There are always moves that can be made to work around the cap, to create cap space, etc. Other teams aren't any different in that regard.

Kessel is one of the top finishers in the league. I think he gets a bit more of a bad rep than is deserved. The contract and age are bigger concerns than anything with him, tho, for me - Jsaquella
Oh yeah no doubt. Kessel is a legit pure scorer in this league. His 200 foot game is a concern as is his contract/cap hit. Just crazy silly to even consider a move for a player like that when we have to basically pay Voracek top end dollars as he's coming off of a season where he's announced his presence as a preeminent winger in the league. |

I like him, but I'm not interested in trading a ton of assets for a 27 year old with an $8mm contract - Jsaquella
So, for all of Phil Kessel's skill, two organizations could not wait to be rid of the guy and he's not even 28.
I think that's worth noting. He's not a franchise piece, despite being paid like one. |
