So, was the "Doug Hamilton is an uppity loner" story discussed over the weekend?

I saw that -- character assassination on the way out the door
The B's haven't changed much over the years; they even took shots at Ray Bourque after he wanted out
And it still doesn't mean they got enough in return; they didn't, so the PR machine has to get in gear |

I'd like officially welcome the Boston Bruins to the draft lottery. Do they have an up and coming defenseman in the minors to replace Hamilton? How bad of a guy could he have been? |

Well, with his fancy overspelling of the name Bork, who could blame them? Talk about uppity. |

Even if he was the worst teammate ever, they still didn't get enough in return, you know?
Could there be fire there? Sure. Absolutely. Maybe Dougie Hamilton is the worst teammate in the history of ever
But that doesn't mean you sell for pennies on the dollar |

They still have Krug, but I don't think they have anyone in the pipeline that can step up and replace him. |

Oh yeah no doubt. Kessel is a legit pure scorer in this league. His 200 foot game is a concern as is his contract/cap hit. Just crazy silly to even consider a move for a player like that when we have to basically pay Voracek top end dollars as he's coming off of a season where he's announced his presence as a preeminent winger in the league. - Pixote Andolini
Exactly. Despite losing Pronger and Grossmann, the Flyers still have guys with contracts who are underperforming their cap costs. Guys like Umberger, Lecavalier, MacDonald and Schenn. You can afford to have that many guys underperforming their deals.
That's what kills teams-not huge cap hits to star level players who are producing. It's giving guys like Soderberg, Kelly and McQuaid too much cash. |

Yeah, I was real surprised by the paltry return of that trade.
Of course, Boston wasn't that confident where they'd let him play in the East. They made sure to ship him out West. |

Restricted free-agent Dougie Hamilton reportedly turned down a six-year, $33 million deal from the Boston Bruins.
Hamilton's camp reportedly asked the Bruins to increase their offer by $2 million more per season. Since Boston was tight against the cap, they opted to deal Hamilton to the Calgary Flames instead.
I agree with earlier posters who said that you deal Chara and get Doug under contract. They probably could've gotten a deal done at 6 or 6.5 mill/year and probably should've. That's only a million more than Amac. |

Nope. They really (frank)ed it up. On both ends. Apparently they had a better offer form Chiarelli, but didn't want to "help" his team out. Moronic and petty, and it seems as if the Jacobs family is re-asserting their power. This kind of childish, cut off our nose to spite your face crap was very prevalent during the 1990's for the B's.
They traded a huge value asset-a 22 year old, top pair, all situations stud defenseman for a mediocre return and then used the picks on three guys that were widely seen as reaches. |

Probably the way to go.
Or, see if Hamilton would accept a lesser term at the money he wanted.
Either way, just ditching the guy seems penny wise and pound foolish. |

Now, watch them expend resources in the future to struggle the get the type of guy they just shipped off. |

If they had gone with Connor, Barzal and Konecny with those 3 picks, I would have been a lot happier with their weekend.
I like the Lucic trade. Guy was up and down, had a big cap hit and really seemed to be in need of a change. They got good value for him. But if you're dealing a Hamilton, you fax everyone in the world, demand a minimum and take the best offer. If no one meets it and you fear an offer sheet, wait and see what the sheet is. If it's acceptable you pay him. If it's not and the compensation is good enough you don't.
The only bad option is if the compensation is the level where he'd get you 1st, 2nd and 3rd rounders and not 4 1st rounders. But if he gets that, match it and then trade him after a year |

The Flyers do have to many depth guys who are making way to much money still. Just not as many as they did 2 days ago.
Paying Amac 5 mill or luke schenn 3.5 mill to play on the 3rd pair or Vinny 5 mill to sit in the press box are absolute cap killers.
Part of the key to that is an honest evaluation of the player before you trade/sign him. Tampa didn't pay vinny a 40+ mill buyout on a whim but you don't sign someone to a huge contract because he was difference maker 3 years ago.
You can't pay veteran 3rd pairing dmen 5mill/yr simply because you have no defensemen ready in the minors.
I still wish the Flyers would've been in on the Nick Leddy salary cap trade last year. That guy was had for Peanuts and and is much better than older defensemen the Flyers are still paying more money but the Flyers had no assets and no cap space.
If the opportunity for a similar type deal where a cash strapped team has to dump a valuable young player, I hope the Flyers are in the position to take them off of that team's hands instead of being the team with it's hands tied.

Did he just become an uppity loner this past week, or was he an uppity loner all of last season when he had a quality year on the ice? |

Has there been a brand new GM that's been as embattled as Sweeney is right now? Not only is half of New England looking to murder him, the rest of the hockey world is laughing their asses off. |

MacDonald is not a 3rd pair defenseman. That seems to be an invention here on Hockeybuzz. He is a top 4 NHL defenseman in this league, and has been for a number of years. |

Same thing with Boychuk. The Isles paid slightly more for either than the Flyers did for MacDonald, but those guys flourished in top 4 roles, while MacDonald continued to show he has issues logging heavy minutes against top level competition. MacDonald was solid when the Flyers had him playing a role more suited to him-and the advanced stats showed that-but I'd much rather have had Leddy or Boychuk for the extra money. |

Yup, if Chara breaks down more next season, they could easily finish at the bottom of the Atlantic. It's ugly in Beantown.

I can't recall one. If he was a racehorse, he'd be running sideways, dragging his jockey on the ground behind him out of the gate. |

If Andrew MacDonald is a top 4 defenseman, than answer this. Would he have been in the top 4 in Chicago, Tampa, Anaheim or NY Rangers?
Yeah, didn't think so. Sure, he's a top 4 guy on a lousy to average D corps. He's not a top 4 guy on a good team.
Feel free to disagree. You'll still be wrong.
