Stepan is likely a $6 million dollar player if he goes to arbitration and it’s unknown whether he would accept a lower cap hit, around $5.7 million, in exchange for a long-term contract. (NY Post)
Stepan could argue for more money on a long-term deal because of what he could potentially make if he were to hit free agency in 2017. |

Was going to post this in a separate blog and likely will but here we go:
Reports were that Florida offered Hayes straight up or two 3rd rounders and a 5th for Talbot. I believe it was two thirds, a fifth and Hayes for Talbot. But that's not the best offer by far.
From a pretty reliable source, San Jose offered the 9th overall pick and a fifth for Talbot and Klein. Sather attempted to go back to Edmonton to try and Yakupov , those negotiations took a while and by the time he got back to SJ, they withdrew the offer and made their own pick. The Rangers had Barzal and Crouse rated high, so one of them could have been a Ranger.
Larry Brooks hints at this when he says in his column Sunday: "But as Sather juggled the offers, interested parties dropped out, withdrawing offers and moving in different directions."
In addition, you wonder if the room freed up by dealing Talbot and Klein, especially Klein, would have gone to keeping Hagelin. If not, that would have been $2.9 mil more to use in either a trade for a forward or in free agency. |

Assuming this is true, we have to remember that this wasn't Talbot for the 9th overall straight up. It would be Talbot AND Klein and while I'm not saying I wouldn't do that trade, it's not that easy to pull the trigger on either. |

We will never win with Sather here, 9th overall and he passed, all time blunder, he may have fleeced Montreal but this move is close to the complete opposite

Weren't you trashing Talbot on the Oilers blog the other day saying talbot was gonna get lit up and the Rangers ran the Oilers in that trade? You would be stupid to not make that deal. Basically Klein for the 9th and you probably could have kept hags. Seems like Sather got too cute |

Bottom line is he can't be trusted to do what's right anymore, Garth Snow has turned into a better GM |

That was rangerdanger doing rangerdanger things, before Talbot got traded he was trolling them about getting the 16th pick because he was so good. |

Yeah, I'll take the GM that has drafted in the Top 5 in the vast majority of his tenure, and had never managed a team to a playoff round victory over the guy whose never drafted in the Top 5 after the first lockout, has made the playoffs every year but one, and has managed a team that has been one of the final four team standing three of the last four years. That makes sense. |

Snow got back in the 1at round twice, Sather had the better asset and couldn't get back in once, this San Jose rumor is frightening
Sather is benefited by a very good amateur scouting staff and assistants, he needs to go, any good GM doesn't think twice about that offer, the league has turned the table on him, he's desperate |

I think what some Rangers' fans are trying to say is that Sather got beat of the half wall on Friday of the draft and snapped his stick like a twig on Saturday. |

Sabers placed Cody Hodgeson on buy-out waivers. Is this guy a viable option? I know he had a crappy past season but this was a high pick that had a great rookie season w/ Buffalo. He could come in real cheap. |

I understand the frustration. We ended up dealing a fan favorite homegrown player in Hagelin and ended up dealing Talbot for a return that was a lot lower than what some media people said it would be.
But I'm with you when you said that Talbot's pending UFA status hurt his value badly. And this Sharks 9th overall pick talk...yea that's tough to swallow if it's true. But that's a big if, and again, you're including Klein in that deal. In terms of value, you probably do that deal every day and twice on Sunday even with Klein in there. But how the hell does that deal help us contend for the Cup in 2015-16? Whoever we picked at 9 wouldn't help us for 2+ years in a best case scenario and in a worst case scenario, they end up being a bust. |

If you believe what Jan posted, it seems like Slats wanted the Yakupov deal. You know how I feel about that guys upside, so he rolled the dice to acquire an elite talent that is three years ahead on the develoent curve then a guy they would have drafted in the mid third of the 1st round (if that was even available). I wonder what a deal for Yakupov would have looked like.

Honestly Etem is no sure thing, if we took on 2 projects at this juncture I'd say they have no idea what they want to do plus I don't think he's gonna sign for a very low number, he's young and already has two 20 goal seasons |
